Best intel in this article is if stuck in Europe make sure you check UAL ZRH-ORD flight as this 767 only had 156 pax!

It was absolutely the correct decision. Moving to another location does not alter the fact that a laptop is in an inaccessible location where the battery could lead to a fire.

30W is not the place to worry about a seat catching fire.

That divert saved United the potential of losing a whole lot more than that.

It only has 167 seats. High J configuration. Nice try though.

that airplane was full…..United has a fleet of 767s configured premium heavy with 167 PAX. There’s only 99 economy seats on the plane.

Totally agree. Pretty much a no brainer. Good job on the crew for making the decision to divert and not proceeding on to the NATS. Unchecked lithium battery fires are bad news.

And on this length flight 1 of those 167 is for pilot crew rest and 4 of the remaining 166 are for FA crew rest, so only 162 available for sale.

oh okay that’s way different than a laptop stuck in a seat.
all the comments saying “this was the right call;” the article didn’t really mention any specifics about what happened, so there is honestly no way to say what the “right” call was unless you had more information but didn’t share it (like this cargo bin info). And just because they contacted dispatch or MX doesn’t mean anything. If the crew was concerned about safety (which, we’ve all met pilots who don’t care as much about safety and some who are more conservative), all they had to do was say “we’re concerned” and then the divert decision is basically made.

You weren’t there. Pipe down. They made the RIGHT call. Regardless of whatever limited info we have on it, it sounds like they made a superior judgment call on diverting instead of continuing all the way across the Atlantic to the west and just throwing it ‘to chance.’ It’s better to play it safe.
