FA staffing solution: offer a decent contract
#11
OK, so maybe I am missing something. What exactly is the big deal here regarding using excess UAL FAs on CAL flights if one is overstaffed and the other is understaffed? I am asking this in context of it being the same scenario that UAL and CAL pilots have. IF the company opts to "furlough" UAL FAs and CAL is short FAs, why not allow them access to the vacancies like the pilot T&PA says? Train them all as CAL new hire FAs. They keep their pay from UAL and retain seniority rights for integration.
That being said, if this is simply the company not officially giving layoff notices and they just want the flexibility to use UAL FAs trained in CAL FA procedures to cover their understaffing, then I see that as being a problem. Were I the unions in this scenario I would tell the company to pound sand. They would have to realize the company could then turn around and just hire new FAs off the street.
Anyone know which scenario it is? Hope the difference is clear enough in my explanation.

I don't pretend to fully understand the details of their issues, but one things for sure, having two seperate (different) Union's representing the two FA group's is setting up a classic 'whip-saw'.
As it was mentioned earlier, if this crusade on the company's part gains traction, Mgt's same 'method of madness' will show up on our door step in the not distant future. At least we have a 'common' Union w/ a standing TPA in place....at least for the remainder of 2011.

At that point the company has no reason to offer a contract once they already have the ability to mesh the employee groups together!

This is a little off topic, but relevant. The Delta/NWA flight attendants are still separate with no end in sight due to union issues. They probably won't combine until late 2012. Merging flight attendants from separate unions is not an easy task. United/Continental will not pay what it will take to merge the groups quickly. United flight attendants will be furloughed while Continental hires. The company will then blame the union for the furloughs. This is setting up the unions to take the blame.
