EWR73FO,
Wow...alot of typing with so little to say.
Reading this sounds like listening to a guy next to you at FL350 in the middle of the night trying to justify and tap dance around the fact he's banking 100 hours while we have fellers out of work.
I just stare at the progress page.

I feel the negotiators are doing a good job of working steadily towards either getting UA to agree to an industry leading contract (doubtful) or working within the RLA to point of an impasse (likely).
Only then will our true negotiating leverage be put to use. It will also eventually root out those who are with us.

I had the displeasure to fly with a united fleet qual many years back. He made the comment, trying to justify crossing the picket line, that if the company wants to pay you to do something, you have to do it. Hence, the individual. What we are trying to accomplish in this contract is far greater than what any pilot can accomplish individually.
If you want to be an individual and name your own price, try applying for a management position. You appear overly qualified.

We do need guidelines and work rules to prevent pilots from harming themselves and from taking advantage of a situation during downturns. The union and the company are both necessary evils and what we as pilots collectively request of the negotiating process is generally what we end up with, more or less.
You mean like when there are over 1400 guys furloughed and the company is able to operate it's schedule based solely on the greed of a minority of guys vs calling anybody back? Is that the kind of a down turn you are talking about?

e: labor union
Definition of LABOR UNION: an organization of workers formed for the purpose of advancing its members' interests in respect to wages, benefits, and working conditions
Definition of ***** Sorry, edited.
1: a woman who engages in sexual acts for money : prostitute; also: a promiscuous or immoral woman
2: a male who engages in sexual acts for money

Some people just don't get it.

Wow. Glad to see anyone with an opinion is a threat at the new UAL. You guys have been ****ed on so long, you'll take your frustrations out on anyone that doesn't goose step right along with you. Since this is becoming a CAL vs UAL argument, what protections, pray tell, does the UAL contract have for its furloughees? How have any of you reduced the suffering of your 1400+ guys on the street? How much money did the UAL pilots raise each year at xmas for the furloughed pilots? What assessment did the UAL pilots take up so that the furloughed pilots health care was paid for? What is the current flight hour limit at UAL? Yeah, I know, your all only flying 20 hours a month but what else have you done? *****ing about some guy working 5 more hours certainly isn't fixing it. How many of you printed the "contract" out, wrote hell no on it and gave to your CP? Do you honestly think that UAL furloughed 1400+ guys because of pilots flying over 75 or 85 hours? How about your senior WB pilots selling your NB pilots down the river. Or could it possibly be that you have no scope protection. And then the scab label. Nice.

Maybe we could have saved a few jobs and spots on a future SLI reaming if we had dropped our LCO max from 95 (98 in some months) to something pre-BK contract. Raising the cap was concessionary and was used to justify our pathetic hourly rates in the guise of "efficiency" (ie. we all work MORE for LESS money now).
Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with somebody picking up open time and maxing out their schedule.....when there are no hostages on the street. UPS and Fedex seem to have understood that during the current downturn, UAL MEC was a bit late. Doesn't matter now, of course, it is what it is.
BTW, I don't see this as a CAL vs UAL or junior vs senior thing. But what is distressing is how can we expect to have any solidarity that might lead to a strike when we don't even have the solidarity to not maximize our own personal interests right now? Just asking.

This is a hypothetical discussion. I don't doubt our solidarity any either airline. I just question some of the particular motives to achieve what we want in the long term.

I'm not going to argue all your points...but I do want to mention the health insurance. UAL ALPA paid my COBRA payments for 18 months when I first went out on furlough. At the time, I couldn't find a job to save my life. UAL ALPA sent me a check every month for about $1500 to reimburse me for my payments. It was a stressful enough time looking for work without the additional stress of worrying whether my family is taken care of if they got sick or injured.
I personally thank every United pilot I see for the Furlough fund when I non-rev. Say what you want about the Union, but from my experience...they have been nothing but helpful to me.
