United Pilots: Recall of Up To 200 Pilots 'Welcome' News

The United MEC today issued the following press release following the Company's announcement of the recall of 100 to 200 furloughed United pilots, who will be offered jobs to fly for United Continental Holdings, Inc.'s Continental subsidiary.

Chicago, Ill., July 14, 2011--The United pilots today welcomed the company’s announcement of the return of 100 to 200 furloughed pilots. It is the hope of the United Chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association that these recalls are the first of a wave of recalls that will eventually lead to the return of all our 1,437 furloughed pilots.

“When a furloughed United pilot returns to our cockpits, whether United or subsidiary Continental, it is welcome news,” said United MEC Chairman Captain Wendy Morse. “No pilots have paid a higher price for the recent shocks to the aviation industry than the 1,437 United pilots who have been on furlough.

Training could begin as early as late September. While these pilots will be hired to staff Continental aircraft, they will retain seniority rights in position on the United pilot seniority list. The seniority lists of both carriers will only be merged after the completion of a Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement allowing United to recognize the benefits of finally completing the merger.

“We still have work to do to get the remaining United pilots off the street,” added Capt. Morse. “We remain focused on securing a Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement with United and getting all of our pilots back to work. We look forward to that day and will not rest until they return.”

Geez. Thanks for the "subsidiary" Continental. Was this really the place for SLI baiting? Especially since the "subsidiary" is providing the job.

Geez indeed. The company called it a Continental subsidiary.... because that's what it is. So is United. Let's leave the conspiracy theories alone long enough to let those that will be returning to the cockpit a chance to enjoy it. They have been the biggest victims of this merger.

I believe the term "subsidiary" applies to both United AND Continental "Airlines" since it is United/ Continental HOLDINGS?:confused:

On a side note, hopefully the "gentleman's agreement" will be upheld for those who "resigned" to obtain a job while furloughed...;)

I didn't like it when then company said it either.

For either union to refer to itself or the other group as subsidiary is just buying into management's playbook, of recasting this company as something other than an airline, and therefore the pilots as something less than the most critical part of the operation.

Perhaps I jumped the gun here as this is very much a great day for both groups. For CAL to get some much needed relief in staffing, and for UAL to get some jobs returned.

The "subsidiary" was not necessary in this rare good news blast mail, nor is it desired in any reference to our pilot groups. We are all one now, right?

BTW, is CAL first year pay REALLY $31/ hr?

I brought up the idea of an assessment for the 6 months with no medical and was told that it would set a bad precedent for the company to use.:(

The 6 month wait for medical should not apply, if I understand the agreement correctly.

I didn't think the term "subsidiary" was THAT big of a deal. Could have substituted "on the CAL side" but that actually sounds more divisive. We are going to hear the term "subsidiary" for a while until we are truly integrated (read JCBA). Truthfully, this company doesn't achieve their "synergies" from this group until the "subsidiary" thing goes away. Bottom line? This is the day our furloughees and their families have been waiting for. These guys have been through hell and back (twice for many) and I'm sure are happy to return to work at either "subsidiary". Many won't return and I don't blame them - United's loss entirely! You won't find a more competent and deserving group than our 1437. Welcome back...finally.
