100-200 UAL furloughees to CAL
OK here it goes, A UAL F/A cornered me yesterday and asked if I knew that CAL was hiring pilots. I said no they couldn't as far as I knew. She responded her last Captain (UAL) that day had told her CAL had just offered his son a pilot position and was hired. OK you CAL guys do your homework and find out, is CAL offering pilots jobs who are not UAL furloughees? If this is true the there is a contract violation in progress.
|
And I did ask if she meant CAL was hiring FAs and not pilots. No she restated the Captain's son was hired as a pilot.
Go to work CAL guys and gals, query your CPs and let us know. |
Perhaps the fella "hired" was selected for an instructor position of some sort.
|
Either the Captain's son is a UA furloughee, was hired into the pool and had a class date that was cancelled in 2008 and is still in that pool now to be tapped after all UA furloughees are "hired", or the FA in question was wrong.
There is a system bid that is allegedly coming out and there are some rumblings it might have vacancies (hiring) on it. I'll believe it when it is awarded and staffed. As per the TPA any hiring would be UAL furloughees in seniority order. |
One of the ACP's said the bid would have no vacancies. CAL doesn't want to hire UAL pilots due to training costs of someone who will return to UAL side later. Double training.? CAL doesn't want to hire off the street because that ignores the UAL furloughed guys. Answer: VJM and picking up open time. CAL has plenty of pilots that will save the airline.
After the merger we may see furloughs. If we give up scope, we will see furloughs. If you are furliughed, you can always apply as a new hire for a United Express carrier flying a 90 seat RJ for $25K/year. |

Could it be "Continental Express"?

Not hired at CAL as a pilot according to the latest staffing report. I would suggest that it is BS.

Thanks to all of you for the input.
Here is what I found over the years, management will do devious things and yes FAs are often a bit unreliable in their rumors. But, often hidden there are some facts. It will be interesting to see how this management will play out the "shortage" coming this fall because of the "new" 737s while they downsize the old fleets (UAL & CAL). Personally I'm betting they will attempt another RJ and start hiring replacement pilots. |
FWIW, taken from another forum:
Heard at the sim building . . . " they will start training UAL pilots [Oct/Nov], the rate will be 30 to 35 a month for 180 to 200 pilots more will follow to cover retirements. We have approximately 30 737 simulator instructors and they are conducting interviews to hire more [instructors] this week. Clearly they are spooling up for a training cycle. . . The instructors and staff are clearly excited about the prospect of training UA pilots." If true, great news for those who need work. |
I've been waiting for a light at the end of this furlough tunnel, but after so many false starts, I'll wait before getting my hopes up.

Yes, there is evidence the school house is ramping up to do 35-ish a month for a total of 200-ish. These should all be furloughed UAL pilots.
|
I remember in Jan when I came back from furlough and was in training building for 2 months. Everyday there was a new rumor about new-hires, either UAL people or off the street. I remember when all these new young faces all dressed up started walking around the building one day. Everyone said those people were off the street interviewing. Then someone said their buddy had just been called for an interview. The next couple of days were quiet, why, because everyone felt stupid because those people were interns just starting. Its about time for the next set of interns to start for the second half of the year.

It's official......told you so....
United Continental Holdings, Inc. has added a news release to its Investor Relations website. Title: Furloughed United Pilots Offered Positions at Continental Date(s): 14-Jul-2011 5:31 PM For a complete listing of our news releases, please click here APPROXIMATELY 100 TO 200 PILOTS WILL FLY FOR CONTINENTAL CHICAGO, July 14, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- United Continental Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: UAL) today announced that it will offer approximately 100 to 200 positions to pilots currently on furlough from its United subsidiary to fly aircraft for its Continental subsidiary. The positions will meet the needs currently anticipated for the combined company's operation in 2012. "We are pleased that through cooperation with the Air Line Pilots Association, we are able to offer the opportunity for these United pilots to come back to work," said Fred Abbott, senior vice president of flight operations for the combined company. "We will continue to focus on negotiating a single contract for all of our pilots as we work towards our single operating certificate." |
The number really needs to be closer to 300 to 400 and it should have been this past march but better late than never I suppose. Since the bid has 201 vacancies I would expect the number to be 201 UAL guys having the option to come over.

hum....so how would that work....would they remain on the furlough list at UAL... or do they give that up to go to the bottom of the CAL list with perhaps at least getting paid for their longevity at UAL... ???
|
Any guesses on what the furloughed United pilots' recall acceptance rate will be? 50% at best would be my guess. Most of the 1400 furloughed are double United furloughees: post 9/11/01 and then again in 2009. How does that saying go....."Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me." Would this be fool me 3 times????
Or as George Bush tried to say: ‪Bush "Fool Me Once..."‬‏ - YouTube |

You don't give up anything from United. They offer spots to UAL pilots in seniority order and you go to the bottom of the CAL list. You are paid according to your UAL longevity (although I'm not clear on whose payscale they use). When they sort out the SLI one of these years, you go back to wherever you fall on the list. At least thats how I remembered it...I will have to go back and read the agreement again. |

GREAT NEWS! Welcome back everybody

CAL is Hiring!
United Pilots: Recall of Up To 200 Pilots 'Welcome' News The United MEC today issued the following press release following the Company's announcement of the recall of 100 to 200 furloughed United pilots, who will be offered jobs to fly for United Continental Holdings, Inc.'s Continental subsidiary. United Pilots: Recall of Up to 200 Pilots ‘Welcome’ News Chicago, Ill., July 14, 2011--The United pilots today welcomed the company’s announcement of the return of 100 to 200 furloughed pilots. It is the hope of the United Chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association that these recalls are the first of a wave of recalls that will eventually lead to the return of all our 1,437 furloughed pilots. “When a furloughed United pilot returns to our cockpits, whether United or subsidiary Continental, it is welcome news,” said United MEC Chairman Captain Wendy Morse. “No pilots have paid a higher price for the recent shocks to the aviation industry than the 1,437 United pilots who have been on furlough. Training could begin as early as late September. While these pilots will be hired to staff Continental aircraft, they will retain seniority rights in position on the United pilot seniority list. The seniority lists of both carriers will only be merged after the completion of a Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement allowing United to recognize the benefits of finally completing the merger. “We still have work to do to get the remaining United pilots off the street,” added Capt. Morse. “We remain focused on securing a Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement with United and getting all of our pilots back to work. We look forward to that day and will not rest until they return.” This is great news! |
Geez. Thanks for the "subsidiary" Continental. Was this really the place for SLI baiting? Especially since the "subsidiary" is providing the job.

On a side note, hopefully the "gentleman's agreement" will be upheld for those who "resigned" to obtain a job while furloughed...;) |

The company called it a Continental subsidiary.... because that's what it is. So is United.
For either union to refer to itself or the other group as subsidiary is just buying into management's playbook, of recasting this company as something other than an airline, and therefore the pilots as something less than the most critical part of the operation. Perhaps I jumped the gun here as this is very much a great day for both groups. For CAL to get some much needed relief in staffing, and for UAL to get some jobs returned. The "subsidiary" was not necessary in this rare good news blast mail, nor is it desired in any reference to our pilot groups. We are all one now, right? |
BTW, is CAL first year pay REALLY $31/ hr?

I brought up the idea of an assessment for the 6 months with no medical and was told that it would set a bad precedent for the company to use.:( |
