Here's my $.02 on the whole "White Pages" thing. Unless you're a legacy UAL 756 or 777 pilot you can't truly appreciate how different our procedures are from each other. My understanding is that legacy CAL's changes are minimal compared to what we've had to learn. I personally have no problem learning the "CAL or Boeing way". The problem is entirely how I was trained. I've worked for rinky-dink commuters and dirt-bag freight operators who had far better training than what the "new United" gave me. Having only performed these procedures a handful of times (756 reserve and I don't fly much) I'm conducting "on the job training" everytime I fly. No kidding, my first go at the new procedures was last month on a rainy low-vis night approach into BOS with a 20 knot crosswind. I'm sorry but that is not the time to be "practicing" entirely new callouts, flows, and checklists. So if you're a legacy CAL guy don't take the whole "white pages" thing personally. However, If you had anything to do with this B.S. method of training...then by all means TAKE IT PERSONALLY!! IT REALLY SUCKS!!!

You haven't answered the simple question: Did the UALMEC confer with the CALMEC? if not, WHY?
I think it was a CAL guy that made it public, but it doesn't matter the intent was to insight and that's exactly what it did - Good Job Capt Pierce.

It was to big for Capt Pierce not to know - you may want to ask him directly, I understand he answers all emails. As I said before, Capt Pierce knew this email would insight and sent it out anyway - WHY?

I don't think that the United MEC's point is that one airlines proceedure is better than another. The issue is that there are significant changes being made to the proceedures that the United pilots are having to follow that they are not being adequately trained for. It would obviously be better to have everyone run thru the proceedures in a sim or at least an FBS before going live with them, but the company isn't willing to pay for it. You can argue over whether or not that is necessary, but it is no doubt safer. I believe that two LCA resigned over the issue. As for advising the CO MEC first, that would have been prudent, but at the same time the CO MEC has done things to get the United MEC's back up including the intransigence on pay banding and demanding pay records for all of the United pilots. Cooperation is a double edged sword.

Great post.

That really hits home and gets to the root of what we're talking about. Spears pointed towards management where they belong and I agree that training by paper is completely unsatisfactory.

Everyone spouts off about how upset they are, yet I continue to receive $50 on time checks.

From the "Chairman"

"Therefore, even though externally we will use the United call sign, internally, I think it imperative that we truthfully advise our passengers that the flight is being operated proudly by ALPA pilots for Continental Airlines. I can imagine something like this, "Hello, folks. From the cockpit, welcome aboard flight 123, operated with the highest level of care and safety by ALPA pilots for Continental Airlines.""

People if this isn't the biggest dividing statement in the world, I don't know what is.

The passengers will be purchasing a ticket on the new "United" airlines not LCAL or LUAL. Yes it is true that until the JCBA and integration are complete we will be operating as separate pilot groups however we will/are all United pilots. If the Chairman can't see this then he is either stupid, trying to pay back the UAL MEC for not getting him the National ALPA position he sought or he is just plain trying to build fences between the pilots who will eventually fly in the same cockpits together.

Gentlemen and Ladies we must say NO to this kind of rhetoric and destructive communication when it comes from either side of the house. This is not some game show where the last man standing wins after playing his tricks on the tribe.

Chairman Jay you are out of line as much as Jeff was at EWR this past week!
