I think invol furloughs stretched all the way back to late '99 hires, but not sure.
I knew the exact date at one time but can't remember. Having said that, I believe Aug or Sept of 99.

Rocko11917,

The new guy is Charley Venama, number is 281-553-8224. Christi's number is 281-553-6520.

I am trying to retire from AD and come back, and becuase of AFPC reviewing my app for retirement 6 days after I submitted, I now need a waiver to the 120 day timeline. Christi said that since I deferred, I can come back anytime...even if there isn't a class being held. Charley is verifying this. If this is true, I should be in training mid-May due. If not true, I have to try and get a waiver to retire Jun 1 and be on terminal leave to make an April class.

Terry

Thanks for the information. I'm on the same program to get the AD retirement and currently at KAF and returning in about a week. Knowing that I don't have to commit to a class in April due to the Mil deferred rules helps out. Cannot confirm if we will get a bid according to our relative seniority at L-UAL with the recalled UAL guys. That is the way it worked when I returned in the past fleet/seat that your relatived seniority can hold. Prefer to go to the 57 at EWR since I'm typed and should be an easy tranbsition to CAL. I probably will be attending in the May time frame if I can work it. Thanks again appreciate the information.

I asked Charlie the same question last night (he returned my call at 1800). He did not know how out of cycle returnees would be handled, but was going to check. Christi told me yesterday that she feels there might be more mil deferred guys coming and "might" be enough to fill a small class in May.

I am going through some a$$ pain with retirements and the time line. Make sure (if you haven't already submitted) that you give them pleanty of warning on when you want out.

Cheers,

Terry

If you guys can stay on active duty for a bit longer, you may want to time a LCAL class date to sometime in July. That way you wouldn't have to deal with summer flying, plus you get a slighter higher military retirement check.

I thought of that. My boss at home said NOW. I said, how about I wait and retire 1 Jul and go to class in May...NOW. So guess what, NOW it is.

Default CAL classes during summer

If the past is any indication, "newhire" training classes at CAL normally to not occur during summer months. If there is a May class, that will most likely be the last class until September.

Just saying...

CAL likes to have all of its IPs/Check Airman on the line during the summer to plus up the #s to cover the summer flying.

However, this could change, but they are junior manning and have actively canceled CAL flights (not many, but at least 2) due to lack of crews on the 737 in IAH just last week.

If a bid comes out, my WAG is that they will have some pretty big classes in March-May and then we'll stop again until fall.

They did say they were not planning on a class in May at this time. Christi said she just has a feeling she might need to build one. Either way, the mil defer folks can come once available class or not. They did say that if I said I was ready/available on day X, they might not be able to start the training until day Y. What I forgot to ask was "If I am ready on day X, is that the day I start getting paid even if I have to wait unitl day Y for training to start?"

Two problems with that theory.
1) A previous poster confirmed that CAL will make summer arrangements for any mil returnees. That means building a class with just one person if necessary. Not desired but that they will accomodate.
2) March and 3 April classes have already been announced at 20/class. I spoke to Charlie Venema last week and he confirmed two April classes of 20. I don't think that they can get much larger than 20 at the moment; it started as 12/class and grew to 16/class and now 20/class.
