The best flying in the system seems to be in EWR for each category. I'll never bid it because I live on the other Coast, but the truth is the truth...

Agree 100%. No question, EWR has the best of every category. I'm SFO and I drool when I look at EWR bid packs.

I'm interested to know the seniority it takes to hold a line as a captain in SFO and what about the most junior reserve captain in Denver. I assume that is pretty high seniority.
Many of us live in PA 1 to 1 1/2 hour drive west of EWR. Cheaper then CA in cost of living and taxes not a bad quality of life. Best part is commute to work and flying in EWR especially on the 756 is the best in the system.

What are some of the places in PA where pilots are living? We are looking at possibly moving there after indoc. It would work out nicely with both of our jobs. Thanks!

I live in Nazareth, PA. 1:08 to the South St parking lot. Rt 78 is very predictable in terms of rush hour (adds about 20 mins to the commute at times). 3 other 756 FO's in my development. I have no kids but schools in this district are supposed to be good.

We're up in Northampton country, close to Delaware Water Gap. 58 mins to Newark, hour 15 to LaGaurdia (which is a player for 320 and 737).

Speaking of all this, it seems like pilots would benefit largely from bases having a larger variety of flying. For example, there are complaints about SFO lines. Why not have SFO 737 lines that go to the caribbean as longer trips and EWR 737 lines that go to Hawaii? Or for the 756 in SFO/LAX have some W trips? Seems like there would be no downside for the company but perhaps I'm missing something. Maybe a good suggestion for the ALPA scheduling guys.

Too many time zones. Plays into FAR 117 having EWR crews do HI flying since its approx 80 degrees of longitude. Plus, it would raise hell with your body clock. If the cost of doing SXM overnights is living in NJ/PA, I'll take Mexico City and Omaha overnights every trip I get. Better to live where you're happy and overnight in a dump than the other way around. Living in NJ wasn't worth the price of admission.

ALPA scheduling guys don't have a lot of say in how the trips are built, or who gets the flying. Safety, and fatigue, yes. Otherwise, not so much.

BTW, that has been tried. What happens is this, EWR or IAD is a 5 day trip or more to the islands. No one wants those trips, they are too long, can't trade, can't drop. So it goes to SL. Many times reserves don't have that much availability, so the trip gets split. Guess who flies the west coast to Hawaii portion of the trip? Yup, SFO or LAX reserves...
