Why are L-UAL guys wearing their old wings

I respect your honesty, but you've just given a bunch of excuses, not a single reason. You're sealing your fate as one of the guys (including those who don't wear their ALPA pins, have Ex-Con bag tags, etc.) who, when pilots walk past you and actually notice your wings, laugh and say to each other "What's with him?"

Thanks for the reference - hope I get a chance to use it again and give George proper credit. As far as age goes, I remember the important discussions we use to have about how to fold the cockpit trash bags. That probably means I'm closer to the end than the beginning. If the past 3 years are an indicator, it's probably a good thing.

RDog,
I won't flame you. I too was hired at U when it was the place to be. I also walked away and took a voluntary furlough because of what it became. I know the history of the wings. Got all of them in a box.
When things on my side changed, I decided to come back and take a job on the CAL side. Dusted off the old suitcase, pulled off the orange crew tag and put it in the box with the wings, etc. Didn't wear a red clip on my ID. And wore the black uniform as it was supposed to be worn by the regulations.
Now, we have a new uniform. Put the CAL wings in the same box. Don't like the new uniform for a number of reasons; however, I wear it after getting some alterations done. Have the new wings on there. Should be the 15-20 year wings but they didn't order enough. Okay, then I'll wear the wings they gave me. Really wish they would let us get embroidered wings on the shirt like CAL had but I digress. I wear the hat with the flaw as well.
Regarding ex-Con tags, etc., I look at that the same way I'd look at you wearing old UAL wings or an orange bag tag. It is immature IMO. Having pride in where you came from in this merged airline can be taken too far. Things such as wearing your old wings simply says I'm not on board. It is counter productive IMO.
Whether or not you wanted the merger to happen really doesn't matter at this point. Get over it.

I haven't read every response in this thread, so forgive me if this has already been said. I, as a 20 year and pin wearing ALPA member and l-UAL pilot, am wearing my old wings for several reasons. First and foremost as a protest to the complete ditching of all UAL history that the old wings represented. For the unaware, the four stars on the old wings represented the four airlines that joined in the '30's to become United Airlines and the rest of the old wings is essentially unchanged from that time period as well. The "hairnet" on our new wings is from a marketing company in the 1990's. Which has more panache? Secondly, The new wings are ugly. Thirdly, I figure if I see people wearing Navy wings, I can wear these and frankly, nobody ever notices anyway. Lastly, and here's the politically incorrect part of this comment, I was hired at UAL when it was the place to be. I know as well as anybody that UAL had many problems and bankruptcy didn't treat us well etc, etc, etc, etc. The fact remains that in the years before and after I was hired, it's a rare bird that went to CAL who wouldn't have preferred to go to UAL. I wear my wings because now a lot of those guys are senior to me, and I'm proud of my history with my first choice. Flame away boys.

Symbolism
Since the old UAL wings had fours stars representing the four original airlines that "united" to form UAL, I figured the new wings would have 5 stars.
If they ever do them again, that's what I'd vote for.
Nice post, Lee.

Yes, UPS was a better choice than CAL back then (which was, by all accounts god awful) and would have been a better choice than any passenger carrier for that matter. That's the 20/20 hindsight part. I was just relating what I saw. Hope (Staller, Carols [sic] Danger, or whatever past and future names you choose) for your long term sanity, I really hope you find a hobby other than taking internet shots at all things related to the former Continental Airlines and its employees. Get out, mingle and you'll find we really are pretty much all alike, we just wound up at different carriers. Then again, there are outliers...
Is it insecurity or do you guys need to be validated some how? In either case, you need to get over that driving force and move forward like a United pilot.

Hope,
Your really starting to cross the line with your wild accusations. I have no idea to your saying I helped bring the mis-deeds upfront? However, to reiterate I have not and am not mgmt. PM me and we can exchange numbers and talk person to person if you like? I did SA work and have several friends who work within the multitudes of layers that make up this bloated corporate structure.
As for the name calling, you called me a mgmt stooge. I haven't called you a name. Your hate of JP speaks to me and really reeks of previous posters who have been banned. If you are not the same person of various aliases, then I apologize. But I have to ask, are you this same person in question? If you're offended don't be, you have been calling me mgmt several times. I am being truthful and honest.
I try and post positive and helpful information without emotional rhetoric. Try it some time, you'll like it. Wearing old wings or putting on my Cal wings to counter is immature and sad in my mind. Having mgmt try and not treat us like real professionals is sad as well. That's all and nothing more. Oh, except that most threads on here are not representative of flying the line and I do think it is and will be a good place to work when we get a crap in one sock, so to speak. I also love helping the potential pilots with the latest gouge and bettering their chances to get hired. We all were there and getting a job with a major is a hard but great goal to have.
Whew, all on a iPhone.

We're going to get absolutely killed in the next round. We're going to have several clubs in our quiver, yet we're going to get killed none the less. The next TA we see will be a quarter of an inch thick and will contain nothing but flounder bait and dollar signs.

Not to disrespect the shrimp but we use to serve the delicacy on a cart in First Class on long haul flights for snacks. We also had a Shrimp stuffed Bass in First and Business that was surprisingly good for airplane food. If Bubba were here, he could tell all the ways to fix the Flounder bait.
