You will need a first class medical within 6 months to interview, but not to start class. To start class you just need a current first class medical. Why the difference? Trying to prevent age discrimination. During the interview if they see you have a first class medical that is more than 6 months old they know you are under the age of 40. They might also infer you to be over the age of 40 if you have a newer medical. I should also add that they ask you mark out your date of birth on all documents before the interview. It is just a simple step to make sure everyone has a level playing field. Also note, it is not required to be less than 6 months old to be selected for the interview. Just needs to be less than 6 months old when you interview.

No one would likely win an age discrimination suit against United anyway. Once they did discovery and found that United is hiring a bunch of guys over 40 they would have a hard time proving United didn't hire them because they were over 40. Just look at the ages of the guys in the recent classes.
Its all just a part of CYA on United's part.

Contrary to misconceptions, not all 40s with pensions got pensions from towing the line and tigers don't change stripes overnight. Some 30s are still malleable and go with the wave rather than their own thoughts. How's that for vague generalizations and preconceived notions? Glad to be on the team with different points of view which lead to a better solution every time vs lemming group think
