Spent several decades in the business...while definitely a minority, "clue minus" is larger than one might think.

Common sense is not common irrespective of brainpower.

Yup. Agreed. Just turn it on!

"The Book" says:

Using external conditioned ground air simultaneously with aircraft air conditioning packs is prohibited to prevent chattering of the non return valve.

I know we are mainly discussing the 737 here, but that is all the Airbus FM says about it. It may be worded differently in the guppy manuals, but if you can point out to me where it says I can't use the packs with with the external air turned off but the hose still connected, I will bow to your misguided efforts to be a company man.

Can you just call ops and ask them to pull the external air early and fire up the APU?

Yes, but at understaffed and outsourced out stations there may be no one in ops to answer or they ignore the request because they don't have someone available to do it right away.

Holy drift batman!!

Why are we still talking about this? If its hot...
1. Turn on the APU.
2. While youre waiting for the thing to spool up, call ops or go down and turn off the ground/PC air (if its even on).
3. Turn on a pack.
4. Profit in your newfound coolness.

That's perfectly legal, but then again, I already said I have done/will do that when appropriate. Your post sounds like it was really just an excuse for a "company man" jab.

You're reading too much into it. What xhooker said. Ground air "connected" means the air is on. Hose hooked up but air not on doesn't count. Hit the OFF button on the walkaround, then packs ON in the cockpit.

It's that simple. Jetway air is easy to shut down, some of the remote carts not so much.

If you turn off the recirc fans and nothing comes out, you have no ground air (for those places you can't see the hose from the cockpit).
