Really?

There are people who will actually come out and shut it off and as far as the FPA thing goes, do you really stay in the FPA until the last minute and will this degrade into a merger thing?

I laugh when the lUAL guys and gals are called "by the book," if it's meant to be an offense so what. Remember this is a public forum and any advocation of non-standard or outside of FOM authorization stuff is not a good thing.

Just make it a point to cool it off or warm it up as needed and start the APU if that works.

If you are going to be "by the book" type I can play that game too.

I will be at the plane calling ops to remove the ground air while you are looking for me in the FPA (good luck).
There is a big red button that is labeled OFF and a big green button that is labeled ON. You use your finger (finger of your choice) and press the button in. (That means away from you). Hold it for a second and release it by pulling your finger away from you. (Pulling is the opposite action from pressing).

There. You've been trained.

That's great. Put that in my training records and I will be happy to do it on surveillance camera.

Where am I saying don't be by the book? To the contrary I'm saying comply with the book and call ops to turn off the air.

Are you advocating operating ramp equipment you have not been trained to operate?

Then call for it to be done, or get out of your seat and tell them to fix it in person. But don't ignore the comfort of our customers. Is it really this hard? We are literally splitting pennies. We are a 40+ billion dollar company arguing about air conditioning. Unreal.

I said in post 70 you will find me in the plane calling ops to remove the air so I can start the APU so they will be comfortable.

While I'm as much of a smart ass as anyone, and I can appreciate the humor... some stations it's actually a lot more complicated. I've searched all over the grundle of the jet bridge only to walk around and ask one of the rampers if he could do it because I can't find the button. STS.

I turn it off too. Calling does no good most of the time. But he is right, we even had a memo that we are not to do it.

Example:
I'm a commuter on a very cold early winter morning flight, the flight crew is delayed due to a short night layover and the CS has decided to board a cold airplane ( freezing cold) so it would be ready when the pilots showed. Now I'm an JSter and in uniform, so the Purser/A/Lead F/A asked me if I could get the airplane warmed up? Well it's not my job, I'm not getting paid and I no longer am qualified on the Bus, so what should I do?

I went and got the heat put on the airplane and by the time the pilots showed things were thawing out and I had my coffee.

Of course I could have made an announcement to the folks and said write management for their excuses and poor performance.

I know so many other pilots who have done things to help their customers, and fellow UAL employees even when it wasn't their job. So call em, get the air removed (or fix the hose), start the APU, or something please!
I think you were trying to do the right thing, but if something had gone wrong (apu fire) or some other mechanical issue, this could have gone very badly for you.

If you are not qualified, you have no business or authority for operating the airplane, pilot or not.
