Let an "old guy" give some recommendation about when to start the APU on all airplanes.
1. It takes forever to cool a cabin once it's warmed up.
2. If the APU doesn't start it has to be written up, there will be a maintenance delay and possibly a turn down of the airplane. Find out early that it may not start.
And the most important reason is...
3. On some airplanes there's no water pressure until the pneumatics is pressurized. Can't make coffee (or tea for you more modern pilots) for Captain without it.
Have we solved the issue yet?

I'll tag onto that. If you pull into an airport where temps are 75 deg +, you're ready to step off the jet and air has not been plugged in, DON'T turn off the apu.

Or (4) is following the 737FM which states ground air must be disconnected before using the packs.

That's easy. Call to have it disconnected. Start the clock. After three minutes crawl out of the seat, walk down on the ramp and shut if off. I'm convinced some stations will never honor a request to have it turned off.

My all time favorite is stepping onto the jet 30 min before departure, halfway through boarding process, cabin is an oven, external air hooked up but not turned on. FA's can't step off airplane to use jetway phone and/or are too afraid of the repercussion of telling the agent not board because the cabin is too hot.

True, but many pilots would say (correctly) it's not their job. I'm just pointing out its not as simple as cranking the APU and throwing the packs on.

It might not be my job, but working in a sauna is not in my job description. I guess I could call zone and have them deplane the aircraft over a safety issue.
