For those with NY experience, what are some other family friendly cities and areas to consider living within 1-2 hour driving distance of EWR (PA/NJ/NY)? Hoping to get picked up in the next year and trying to get an idea of what some options are at these junior bases. Thanks!

I understand there will be some unpredictability, but several posters earlier in the thread concurred with the ~2.5 hour estimate. But hey, 2.5 or 3.5 it's still a) driveable and b) too far for a reliable short call (esp on probation) without an alternative plan. Thanks for the additional SA though.

I grew up in suburban NYC and have family in the Albany area, which is why I'm contemplating a move there. However, the earlier post about Eastern PA syncs up with what I've heard before if you're looking for a good balance of family-friendly, reasonable home prices, and less-than-horrendous taxes. Since a lot of legacies and regionals have NYC bases you might see some helpful comments on the other boards as well for good places to live w/ a NYC base.

I grew up in NYC, but have spent the last 35 years in the Hudson Valley, specifically Monroe NY. Huge bang for the buck, $300K will buy you a 4-bedroom house on 1/2 acre. Taxes are high though. You can reach EWR in one hour ten minutes on a good day, two hours on a really bad day. Many NYC professionals live up here because Long Island, Westchester, and metro New Jersey are way too expensive.

Lots of folks live in ABE. I've visited out there for a few days here and there. I'd do it in a heartbeat if I could convince the wife.

Having gone through my research a little over a year ago I came up with the following. The central Bucks County area of PA is about the nicest area in Eastern PA. Doylestown is the county seat and is the central hub of Bucks County. Some of the smaller towns surrounding Doylestown are very nice as well, especially if you are looking for something with more rural land like I am. The schools are top rated, the Doylestown area is very nice with historic charm and lots of bars, good restaurants, family activities. My only complaint is the property values are very high compared to what we were used to in Ohio. Taxes are high, but nothing like NY and NJ.

Yup. Have lived in NY and NJ, but our family is now very happy near Doylestown, and the drive is 1:20 to EWR, 2:00 to LGA. Obviously LGA highly variable depending on traffic over the bridges.
