To set the record straight I've posted a few times management (Howard and others) have told those attending captain upgrade training while visiting flight ops in headquarters the 16,000 number. What I reported was accurate that it was said by management, I never said it was going happen. Always said something like don't shoot the messenger this was said.

One thing to consider is some or all of this could be a combination of a negotiating position between Boeing & Airbus and some fleet realignment liked rumored above more 777's and A350's for A320 and A321's. I also wouldn't rule out an acquisition of a JetBlue, Frontier or Spirit. That could get you to the 16,000 number.

Mr. Munoz is on record promising almost $5 billion in increased profit over the next 4 years. That doesn't happen with zero growth. My money is on Sniper's report.

I have my fingers crossed he's right because the day the A321 order is announced is the day I bid Airbus captain.

Well, that's not what the article said, so you can't break out the "I told you so" article yet! It says swapping A350-1000's for A350-900's or even A330's. Now, will they defer some orders down the road? Probably. But no deferral for widebody's has been announced.

One positive note from the article. Levy is on record as saying they need to evaluate the stock buyback. Good. Let's stop draining the coffers for the hedge funds

Unless they have unannounced planes in the pipeline, parking the -400's and PS 57's by 2018 is a rather large loss of lift unless they can further increase aircraft utilization.

You've been around long enough to know that an aircraft order does not equate to actually flying said airplanes.

Where has there been any indication that PS 57's will be parked?

Well...I have a memo in my hand from Steve Forte dated July 9, 1999 that reads:

"by 2009 we could have 1000 aircraft and 17,800 pilots to fly them"

I post a copy of it from time to time on the Wailing Wall in ORD...

Pure speculation from someone's post above.
