2017 UPS Hiring

Appx. 300 new hires for 2017 announced by the company in Nov 2016.

Word on the street is that a class in Jan has been filled. No other class date have been announced. Expect 1 class a month of about 30 or so.

Interviewing continues at an undefined pace - I met a guy jumping in to interview this week. No notable changes to the interview process.

Make sure you are being offered an interview for a line pilot position not a management pilot position. You'll thank me later.

Firm orders for 14 747-8 with options for 14 more aircraft. Most believe the other 14 will be for 777 and announced soon.

Good Luck!

We seem to be behind the hiring cycle.. No surprise there..

Before the new -8s show up all 400 pilots must've completed the differences training; supposedly a 3-day course. In order to have everyone finished by the time the first new airplane shows up on property they think they need to start training by March of next year.. It'll be a tight schedule for sure.

JA calls are going out every day and many, if not most of our managers will be flying this year's peak season.
Wouldn't be surprised if the already announced "hiring of nearly 300 pilots in 2017" turns out to be more like 400 in 2017 and an additional 100 - 200 in 2018. Simply put we are a couple of years behind on the crew planning side..

Moderator(s) - thanks for closing the old thread and FTFF for starting a new one.

Hopefully it turns out to be helpful for guys/gals we'll be flying with in the near future...

I definitely owed you one Whalesurfer.

Just read a post from Albie that at Purple 2.5 year guys are enjoying the left seat and there are now a few 5 year Captains on the MD. 10 years is the current conservative first available upgrade at Brown with 7 years being the most optimistic guess. Anybody run upgrade numbers with the dash 8 staffing factored in? And then with the staffing for the additional 14 options?

The 400 is currently staffed at 23 IPA pilots per airframe. If the -8 is staffed similarly, that's 122 new Captain positions and 322 total new pilots to account for 14 growth airframes.

Beyond that, you have block hour growth flown by existing airframes and contractual changes like OCV driving additional staffing beyond retirements and normal attrition.

To put the 2017 announced hiring of "nearly 300" into perspective, that would be equivalent of Delta hiring "nearly 1500" based on pilot group size.

Hopefully you will get the call, make it through the first year and enjoy the $170,000 second yr.

I can't imagine it is any shorter than 7 years.
