You're asking the right questions. From q3 report: 5-6% capacity growth through asm s. With that said, it's obviously a fluid situation. Also, we have to replace the 717 lost lift. Either way I am also hearing 400 new hires but it would be for no net new aircraft. Increased block hours, aircraft coming off conversion, increased vacation weeks and retirements (150).

6% growth would be 480 pilots + 150 retirements

I'd bet the increase is block hours. Net fleet count will still be flat. At the end of the day, more hours flown = more crews.

He probably meant 6% ASM growth. That would make more sense as 400 NHs would be about 3% growth. As for used -700NGs on the market? There is and will be for the foreseeable future plenty on the market.

Great questions. I asked similar questions to the "source." Six percent is nebulas with out the qualifier. 400 NHs in 2015 will be great if true.

The VP of flight ops just confirmed in an email:
Current plan is 300 this year with classes starting in late summer/early fall.
600 next year.

Just read the same email. Whack, you're correct the six percent growth is forecasted ASM growth.

New airplanes feel good, but to be honest, all we really care about is block hour growth. It takes more pilots to fly more block hours.

Back in the pre 9/11 world before contracts were abrogated due to force majeur the contracts included various provisions: minimum fleet count, minimum block hours, and minimum captain positions. All three of those kept the company from outsourcing too much of the operation.

Unfortunately, at least at USAir, when Rakesh Gangwal called 9/11 force Majeur - and act of God - all three of those went out the window and an armada of RJs darkened the sky.

Precisely. All that truly matters is block hours. Still, I'm left wondering where these 49 -700 NGs are going? 717 replacements? Classic replacements? Growth?

I heard that number for the first time yesterday. Is it truth or fiction? Once the 717s are gone where are we with the total fleet count? (both companies)
