Displacement rights I thought protect from or give priority in secondary vacancies. Or maybe that’s not a thing.

If you’re displaced you can go to any seat in any base provided you can hold it, if the junior captain in each base is senior to you, and there are no more vacancies for the left seat, you can no longer hold a captain position.

there are no displacement rights at Alaska in the current CBA aside from if you can hold it, you can have it

Should it be any other way? A Captain displaced out of base X should get priority over a Captain spots in base Y even if a Senior pilot is an FO in base Y and decides they want that CA spot? How would that be fair?

no, if a captain is displaced out of base X and a FO, who is senior to Captain in bass X, they will get the captain slot over the current captain and be awarded upgrade, and the captain in basics could potentially be downgraded to FO because they can no longer hold captain because a bunch of senior FO’s decide to take the vacancies

Your #1 bid needs to be the current base/seat. If you can’t hold that, then displacement rights kick in. Right? Because on paper you need to be displaced out of base (as in, you couldn’t hold your own base/seat) in order to use displacement rights and go into a position that might not even had a vacancy (say, ANC Capt).

I would think there are displacement rights. If displaced, you can bid into a position that doesn’t have a vacancy, and kicks the bottom guy out in the process.

correct but with SFO being reduced and it also being the most junior base displayed 30 captains and open up 30 San Diego captain slots 30 FO senior to those 30 captains they would get the upgrade awarded to them, and then those captains are no longer senior enough to hold any Captain seat in any other base or seat. They would all then be downgraded to whatever they can hold, which would be any of the FO seat they desire.

So the senior pilot gets first dibs on new Captain positions?

Only the very bottom 13 SFO CA are most junior. #14 as of the May bid award, could displace into SEA CA and kick the bottom guy out there.

SAN will probably trend senior, and plenty of SFO and LAX guys will bid it. Could turn out there aren’t any reduction awards processed because enough CAs bid out SAN as their #1 choice and fulfilled a reduction requirement in SFO/LAX.

How you bid matters.

When NYC was closing, it closed with 23 LA CA and 37 SFO Capt vacancies. If I had bid just LAX Capt as #1 and SFO Capt as #2 I would have gotten SFO Capt because there were no LA spots left by the time it got to my seniority. But by bidding NYC Capt as 1, LAX as 2, and SFO as 3, the system recognized I can’t hold NYC, and now displaced me into LAX despite zero openings.

Bottom line, if you’re an extremely junior Capt, bid your own base and seat as #1 and then whatever else you are okay with as #2 and so on.
