Question Best and Worst of AK Airlines?

Thanks for the above responses. Anybody care to chime in on best parts of working for Alaska and the Worst? Also, how senior is ANC as a domicile right now (how long would it typically take to get transferred)?

I give this points for originality. And for being the only question asked in the last 3 years on this thread that hasn’t already been answered….

I think that all this has been answered recently in the past few pages of this thread.

I most recently have come from Part 135 charter, however have also worked at ExpressJet. For me, even being on reserve with 12 days off, it was already a schedule improvement from where I was coming from, so that helped. I took a pay cut for year 1, year 2 I was back to where I was at Part 135, and year 3 I am making more than I was in charter. Over-all in the industry though, we work more, get paid less , and have significantly less days off than every one of our 121 peers, so eventually that will start to wear you down.

The schedulers and good from my experience, and they don’t try to screw you with last minute notifications for reserve trips (although it does happen). If you’re LAX based and closer to SNA they look at that and sometimes will give you the SNA trip and give an LAX trip to someone closer to LA… not always, but we’ve seen it happen.

Management seems out of the loop on the real issues here, or they simply don’t care.

All of the gate agents are very friendly, which was a nice change from the United XJT side of things.

Maintenance is good, and I feel like the planes are kept up well.

If you’re coming from the regionals you will probably notice a difference in the Flight Attendants.. here there is less interaction and camaraderie.. it’s not that often where we go out as a crew, it’s typically just the pilots doing their own thing, and the FA’s do their own thing. Half the time you don’t even see the two in the back, and it’s pretty typical to switch FA’s every leg.

The STD and LTD seem good, health insurance seems good. Paychecks arrive on time and seem accurate, although I don’t go through with a fine comb.

The catering on the flights has improved, so the crew meals are decent. Our per diem is probably the lowest in the industry, although I haven’t compared it in a while.

There was the joke from our last forced contract where management said we should expect 5th best (pay, schedule, etc) in the industry, but we are not 5th best… probably more like 7th best, if that. We’re trying to change it with this new contract, however management (with the highest profit margin in the industry) says it would cripple their business plan to give us industry standard, so if you come here you should expect to be ready to fight for improvements.

Don’t come to Alaska hoping or expecting any mid continent or east coast base.

EDIT: I forgot to add that we have zero scope or job protections. If you remember back in 2006/2007 when airlines were bringing on as many RJ’s as they could to outsource as much of their flying as possible.. that’s about where we are at now. This company often times feels like it’s 10yrs behind the industry.
Where are the pilot bases for Alaska? Does it depend on the plane you are flying?

Never heard of an airliner having a LEMO plug. Airbus has XLR-5, 737s have dual GA plugs. Unless Alaska has something nonstandard…

Are you telling me that i am required to work for a specific company to make an attempt to answer a question that all others ignored and try to make fun for asking?
Are you saying that AS 737 and 320s are different than other companies?
I did make a mistake, i meant to say the XLR and not LEMO. I'll own up to that.
