I guess you don't understand what "elitism" means. It has more to do with wealth and privilege than it does with qualification.

What purpose it that? To spend tens of thousands of dollars for piece of paper that in no way qualifies you for your job better than anyone else?

Do tell. I want to hear all about it. Because my response was clearly not intended as a cheap shot.

I'm not going to waste everyones time rehashing the advantages of a college education. You know, there's a reason the military requires a 4 year degree to become an officer (In most every case). All things being equal, I too would like to hire college educated pilots for my airline. The key here is "All things being equal"

Did you interview, or just apply? I applied the last three times and have never heard anything. 5700TT, 3700PIC, a little over 300TPIC, 1900 Part 121, Engineering degree, some grad school, 15 years of verifiable volunteer work. The only communication I have received is the "If you want to still be considered, please reapply" email.

Interviewed mid march and got a conditional offer

Did first interview at NW Aviation Conference

TT: 5200
Turbine PIC: 2400
121/135
Check Airman 121
12 internal LOR
CP meet and greet

Job fairs key to getting interview (went to WIA, OBAP, PNW)

Said to be doing two interview sessions per month through June, good luck everyone!

Of all your qualifications I'd say the 12 LOR are the most significant. Congratulations and good luck.

Just my opinion though, not based on hard fact.
I have two friends with a 1 April interview. They are from the Sept application window. I would bet the second round of interviews in April will come from this most recent window. It seems folks get a call for an interview about 3-4 weeks in advance.

Just to further clarify, in case Mike wasn't obvious--the 12 INTERNAL LORs...

For those of you with qualifying times but are getting TBNT emails, have you had a pilot at Alaska take you to meet a base chief pilot? It seems they will always be honest with you, as in, you need to do x or y to be competitive, or your resume looks good...

But you are in a circular argument--your definition of a "qualified aviator" does not require a degree. Alaska's definition of a "qualified aviator" does (along with other things that may have little to no bearing on one's ability to operate stick and rudder and throttles, like not using nicotine).

However, they are in charge, not you, so they determine what they want for new hire pilots. Don't like it, then start your own airline that doesn't require a degree ... I think we will continue to have plenty of "qualified aviators" that do have degrees for awhile yet.

And if it smacks of elitism, why do most, if not all, major airlines have that as a requirement? Maybe those who carry hundreds of people on an airliner are elite, in some sense?

The 300 TPIC might be a little low in their eyes. Have you been going to all of the events that they are at to speak with them? How about meet and greets with Chief Pilots or base supervisors?
