It’s all about trade offs. Are you willing to fly old airplanes to get the domicile you want? Or must you fly the newest jet and accept the commute?

S80 out of DFW has always been a valid preference bid. If someone really wanted to be based out DFW and wasn’t picky about the flavor of airplane, then he could already be there. The company took junior line pilots out of other bases before giving it to new hires.

First year pay of ~$86k is too little to live in (near) the LAX area for a year until jumping to ~$130k+? Perhaps the new hire who CAN'T do that is the one not in their right mind.
Not doubting that LA, and California in general, is more expensive than the US average but a little bit of fiscal responsibility and budgeting goes a long way. Lots of people would kill to have a job that makes $86k.
But hey, if you want to up that first year pay in the next contract cycle I surely won't complain. I'd even offer to take that LAX slot off your hands.

I would guess that the STL closure will cause at least a slight increase in the need for DFW S80 Pilots.

The pilots and aircraft are all being displaced. The planes will go to DFW. The pilots will go to whatever location is on their displacement bid. Some will chose DFW to stay on the S80. Others will chose other bases and aircraft for an easier commute and/or better pay (or pay protection).

If you’re going to commute anyway it’s not a bad option. You’ll be locked into another school in a year or so but that will have no lock-in if you displace.
If you live in an AA base it’s not worth commuting to junior rsv in DFW just to fly the S80.
The best thing it has going for it is a quiet and comfort cockpit once you’re sitting down.
If you want to fly a 1960’s design with a basic autopilot, non FMC, aircraft the S80 will be your last chance.
