I used to work at Penske Truck Rental. One way rentals to California were always a deal since we always had a shortage of trucks there. One way rentals out of California were always expensive. One way rentals to Florida were consistently the most expensive.

After a furlough or three, you will probably be the same way.

No but I am willing to learn.

Like most other pilots I am willing to drive twelve miles to save a penny on gas. Take a pocket full of free cookies from the hotel desk. Tell the restaurant my twelve year old with a beginner mustache is actually six to get the discount. Spend fifteen hundred to put tires on a car worth four hundred. Bargain with the manager at Wal Mart. Wash clothes in the shower to save money on water. Grab all the coffee packets at the breakfast bar. And clip coupons rescued from the recycle bin.

Remember; if its yellow let it mellow.

Does that twelve year old of yours identify as a six year old girl? Then she is.

Still haven’t topped a coworker who used to take all the hotel soaps home and built a press to mold them into a single bar of soap.

I bring my own soap due to sensitive skin but I do keep all the tiny pieces and mold them into a bar. I also find hotel towels to be well priced. I never buy ketchup just make a weekly trip to McDonalds. Split my two ply toilet paper into one to double the roll. Pay my bills online and use the free envelopes they send for other mail. Get my sunglasses from the lost and found (just ask for black ones). Donate my clothes to Goodwill and then buy them back for less than the deduction. And last but not least break up with girlfriends right before any occasion requiring a gift.

You know, just regular pilot savings measures.

Funny you mentioned mail, I once sent a letter to my folks by putting their name as the mailer and mine as the addressee...and did not put a stamp on it. It went to the other side of the country.

That wasn't so much out of cheapness but I just wanted to see if it could be done.

I bought soap for the first time in 15 years last month. I do "donate" a bunch of it though. I had no idea how cheap it was.

Good tip on the Goodwill scam.

Its double dipping but if you buy the clothes from Goodwill first, then donate and buy back its more profitable. Buying them from regular stores lowers the margins.
