But you said American faces the same fate as GM, despite being in a situation that really doesn’t compare. That’s not an imperfect analogy, it’s trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

I DO think it faces the same fate. The specifics may vary, but I feel that if American is to survive in any way, shape or form, it will be as a much smaller and more nimble entity. And, like GM, it may find itself in the position of having to sell off good chunk of its franchise in order to satisfy the bankruptcy judges this time around. Every single entity which makes up today’s American has been through bankruptcy once already. To appear in court with your hat in your hands and say “This time will be different—honest!” would seem to be asking a bit much.

American may be too big to fail. But it’s also too big to survive in its present form.

My point is that many of those things that you are describing that transpired at GM did not happen in bankruptcy court. They happened as part of their agreement with the US government to get bailed out. That is wildly different than going through chapter 11 proceedings. That's what I'm getting at, and that's why I'm saying your analogy is bad.

Sell a good chunk to who? Everyone is in the same position.

AA, and everyone else, have a viable business plan. In the past that was not the case. Demand is the issue. Once the govts around the world smarten up demand will return. AA can’t pay off it’s debt by being smaller than it is. It’s going to be hard enough at their present size.

private equity will bid for wholly owneds and spun off ground services packaged with long term contracts.

Delta and/or Southwest probably will have the ability to buy central/South America

For clarification, you are arguing AA will cease to exist?
