It's the east hangar (the old Delta facility) in between 17L and 17C that's on lockdown. When I left yesterday, the hangar doors were closed, but one of the 777-300s was outside...still painted gray.

well, the 2nd 773 (ship #7LB) was ferried from DFW-VCV last night. She should be coming back in to DFW early tomorrow morning, around 4am. Anyone who pulls an all nighter at DFW Founder's Plaza to catch the first glimpse better fess up here.
We also sent a 737 out there last week.
edit: 737 ship# 3JT on her way to DFW this morning from VCV, ETA 0830. Might be sporting the new look.

me wonders why a likely-to-merge airline would go ahead and paint two 777s in legacy colors only to have to repaint them at the cost of ??? dollars. When said airline is not exactly financially fit.
I bet a merger is announced with new paint scheme, in a big ceremony of koom-by-yah (spell?) and we are one family, one brand now

Years ago, I knew the PPG rep who hung out/worked at Delta in ATL and he said the typical plane back then (they have gotten bigger since) took 40-50 gallons of polyurethane paint. Throw in the labor and materials cost of stripping, priming, taping and spraying and its one helluva bill per airframe.
I know a handful of DAL pilots who weren't pleased with mother Delta repainting the planes post-bankruptcy because of the obvious cost. As they said, if DAL could afford to re-brand the planes, they could afford to give us a raise.

My understanding, back in the day, AA bragged about how they saved money by not painting their aircraft. That polished metal was the way to go. Said the extra weight of paint increased fuel costs. That,s some heavy paint. Maybe some new stripes.
