AA73 beat me to it. The MD-80 is going to be around for a long time yet.
I jumped on the MD-11 years ago when it was being sold to FEDEX, and was a dying system. I'm glad I did, and I enjoyed it, but there's something to keep in mind when you bid a dying bid status...
First, the work load on the MD-80 is higher than other jets, but that's not a big deal. The main objection - as the jets are parked and pilots flowed off, the flow (displacement, stand-in-stead) is from the top down, meaning if you are really junior, you may be stuck there for quite a while.
That may not be an issue at all if you enjoy the jet and the flying.

I wonder if anything I've ever flown could be considered New & Shiny. The T-45s were the newest, and I think they were 15 years old and trapped out.

The -80 fleet has some of the finest check airmen ever. Easy school too. As far as steam gauges go... the entire -80 fleet has either GFMS or dual FMCs with VNAV (newer birds.) All have the standard two-tube EFIS, and some have the digital engine gauges.

AA has done a good job in the last decade with both training, and with check airmen.
Usually, an airline's school house and CKA group tends to form a "good ol' boys club", where it's not how good you can instruct, it's who you know, and it can become stagnant and cliquish.
Somehow, they got it right and the bad CKA are 99% gone... and the training in all fleets has really improved. This is why I was a bit upset at my last recurrent when they were saying the US training personnel were coming on strong and trying to take over.
I have no doubt we need to adopt and import certain US things, and the list would include the reserve system, non-revving, quite a few others. But the AA schoolhouse is NOT broken, and is as good as I've seen it in 20+ years.
