Just posting a datapoint here:

Applied April 6, Interviewed April 28, and on May 1 was offered a 747 spot for a June 8 class. That seems to be an earlier class date than others have been receiving (perhaps someone had to cancel or reschedule). Anyway I am super grateful for the opportunity and look forward to working with everyone!

Congrats. The 747 is a nice plane. See you when you get here.

Hold the phone, are we talking about the same outfit. Some % increase for some Kung Flu flying, Per Diem plus up, 10% bump up. Some things are temporary but the bump? Let us know of anything official about the Cheddar. Thanks for the hint.

And welcome Gagapilot to the shell game. Good time to be on board it seems! We’ll see you in the line.

Default Upcoming Southern Interview

HI all,

Been reading this thread with some head scratching. I have an upcoming interview with Southern and I have. few questions I hope can be answered.

I’m a regional FO, just shy of 1,000 121 hours, who came from the cfi ranks. It seems from my reading that a lot of the other applicants are much more qualified than I am. If, and i know it’s a big if, granted a class date, do you think my low time will be a detriment to making it through training? I read training is not AQP, so how is the training? Lots of wash outs or will folks work with trainees. thanks for all of your information.

If you have an interview then they want to hire you. Don't sweat your experience. Use it to your advantage and tell them how trainable you are! I'm on the Atlas side and once you are in training they teach you or show you what you need to know. They're not out to fail you. If you can study and learn you'll be just fine. It was very straightforward. I got a friend of mine hired in 2018 with about the same experience and he did just fine! Besides the low pay and moral, its a cool job!

Is AQP somehow easier and let less skilled pilots make it to OE?

This is solid advice. There are high standards of training but every instructor will go above and beyond to help if you have a good attitude.

I don't think it is easier, but it feels more organized. Regarding less skilled pilots, every carrier has them.

A couple decades ago people (including me) were worried about this, but that's not actually been the case. There's a maneuvers validation and a scenario-based part. The scenario is based part is put together based on data collected through LOSA, FOQA, ASAP, etc. You still have to fly V1 cuts, and other maneuvers to standards, so it's not a free pass to folk who can't fly. AQP gets training away from a standard script and moves it toward addressing current and forthcoming problems. You could argue less-skilled pilots would do better with the old system since they can memorize a script in the sim but still have no clue in real operations.

AQP, LOSA and FOQA and have been around for some decades now. The carriers that adopted these programs generally saw improvements in safety. Those improvements outpaced performance of carriers that did not adopt AQP, FOQA and LOSA.

The danger in adopting parts but not all of AQP is exactly what you fear, though. I can go on and on about this.
