I saw the Aussie airbus down there a few times. So it is possible for commercial jets to get in. Maybe just not ones of our size. I'm also not sure the -8s would do so well with the engines so low to the ice.

Is that how long it takes flying a big, fat, grey airplane at .68? Knock at least an hour off that in a 74.

It was a phenomenal .74-.76 thank you. It wasn't made to be aerodynamyic. Just deliver lots of stuff after burning lots of gas. But at least its still younger than me, my kids, and most playboy models. Can't say that about much of the current air force equipment.

Was sitting on the ramp at Yokota AB (Tokyo) in my DC8 preparing to depart for Paya Labar AB (Singapore). A nearby C-17 loaded up and taxiied out about 20-30 minutes before we blocked out.

7+ hours later we're getting in the van to ride over to customs in Singapore and here comes that same C-17 taxiing up to the ramp!

Yeah, but that C-17 was only getting fuel and pressing on for another 7-8 hrs. Hey, is the old guy still at the base of the tower with his awesome Thai fried rice?
