Should I buy a type rating?
Don't laugh, have over 10k hours and zero type ratings! Have been pt91 for a long time. I want to move into jets and sent several apps out and even had a few replies...each asked if I was typed in anything and of course I had to reply NO. What do you guys think? Go get a 737 type or a citation type or...just keep beating on doors? I don't know which is worse, lack of 135 experience or no type.

Do you want to do 135, 91, or 121 now? I do not think a type will help you get hired at any regional airline or 135 firm because they include types in the training for new hires. 91 is another story, depends on the firm. If you have a ton of crop dusting or other VFR work you need to round out your resume in terms of IFR experience and twin engine time, a random type rating will not help very much. Have you got your CFII, decent actual IMC, and plenty of recent instrument time? Those are probably more important.

Thx for the replies! Interested in Jets period! Figuring 135 is going to be the easiest way back in then 121 or 91corporate, took the past year off! I am mid 40s with plenty of hard IFR experience, single pilot, single Tprop. Planning to add on my CFII to get back in the air, probably pick up something temporary to get current again. Looking at south florida and well aware of the conditions...I don't mind, humble and willing to work!
Seems like every ad I see wants a type rated pilot.

Not only that but most places want 500+ hrs on the type.
Having a type with no time in it is just about worthless.
Can you get hired without a type, sure...but it is few and far between.
As more guys start retiring, next 5 yrs or so, the market will start to open up.
I would say you need mutli and jet time.
Remember, it is still an employer's market and they can still be very choosy.

10k hours? What type of flying have you been doing, and where have you been applying? Not even a regional?

Pay to play
I have to point out that those who think we stop paying for our jobs as pilots once we get our commercial license are wrong. We also pay through accepting criminally low wages, training contracts, personal life sacrifices, and even in cash long after we have been flying professionally through purchasing an ATP and type ratings to remain in the saddle.
So I ask you, if someone pays for an actual job what is the difference? At least when we pay in cash we can measure what the career is really costing us.
