If you dont want to live here than you should be on your own to get to work. I think FDX bends over backwords to cater to commuters. So what if there are 30 out of 200 lines that are out and back. Dont bid them.
I get it, The "don't like MEM quit and work for someone else mentaility?"
I will make an assumption that you are a Product of the SW TN public school system or Northern MS school system?

Using your argument, none of us should have heeded ALPA'a advice for the past 3 years and we should have accepted the company's first contract proposal of a 2% raise? After all if we weren't happy we should have all quit and gone to work somewhere else? Thank goodness most of us know better.

Remember FDX use to also have domiciles in EWR and OAK.......and LAX before the closed it and then decided to re-open it 8 years later, or has your memory left you?

I have to disagree with you on this. FedEx loves that @ 70% of it's pilots commute - it saves them A LOT of money annually in D/H money. For example: the trip I'm flying tomorrow from BOS saved the company @ $340 because the Captain lives there. There are minor exceptions like he may take a cab/limo to-from the airport but in general, it's a plus for the company..........and I'll save them @ $1500 this month in D/H $$ due to my line being close to home....and believe me I'm not happy about it - I'd prefer getting some extra $$ in my pocket in return.

Let us not forget the unbelievable flexibility it gives the company having Pilots live in every city FedEx serves.

They often have to Field Draft pilots to cover for their extrememly tightly optimized scheduling.

When a crew goes Illegal or Sick in the field, more often than not Crew skeds must field draft a local living pilot because they can't legally assgin or cover the trip with a reserve. Millions of revenue per year are saved.

Company never acknowledege this fact openly, but many ACP's do "Off the Record"..........

If it makes you feel any better...I don't think anyone is picking on your little piece of Eden. I also don't like Memphis. But there are many places that people don't care for. Some of mine are Newark, Buffalo, Little Rock, Albuquerque, Provo, Miami, Houston, El Paso and the rest of Texas.

I respect the pride you feel for your hometown. But, if you insist on professing your love for Memphis...you need to toughen up a bit. Good grief. Can you imagine someone from Dallas being as thin skinned as you are?

OOH... now I'm hurt. I can't believe you're picking not just Houston and El Paso but all of Texas! I think it's just sour grapes...

Don't mess with Texas........

Actually, If you draw a straight line from El Paso to Beaumont, you can have anything south as far as I am concerned........except maybe Padre Island.

I just rolled over and embraced the madness.

I commute. I also get a hotel and bid O&Bs. Yeah--sucks not getting perdiem and drinking a beer at 9 pm in the hotel. On the other hand--it ROCKs showing up with a gym bag half the size my jepps bag used to be.
With my second back operation in 2 years due this month, not lugging a suitcase is now a viable bidding consideration. On the other hand--a cush trip like OAK-Fresno has you checking into/out of a hotel twice a day. I couldn't hold that anyone--except VTO--but I find bouncing into the AOC with one day light bag and rolling back into my hotel/crashpad (typically Tunica) with a clean uniform hanging up waiting and my "nest" already built is really not an "unpleasant" way to do work. What I give up in perdiem I make up with Q of life...and of course for the cheap airline pilot I could point out eating at Bennigans would cost more than my perdiem on day flight, but that yummy crew meals stays with me all night long...

All that aside--I like to see as much variety and "good lines" in the bid pack as anyone. I do love the mix and match variety of our flying, and I'd hate to see it morph into less choices.

Where do we get the best deal in Tunica? And, how much is the deal?

I often stay at the Grand. Pre-Katrina, I could sometimes get a room there M-Thurs at 40 bucks or less. Post Katrina you are lucky to get it at 50-60. Its an honest 30+ minutes or more down there. However, they have a gym, wireless internet (for a fee), and its nice enough to do some business while I am in town with clients as well.

The casino there has grown in volumne...used to be easy to stroll in, work into a 5 or 10 buck table or a hot craps table. Beer/food/comps came quickly. Reminded me of old downtown Vegas casinos circa 1990s (for you ex AF types...) Post some mangement changes (casino's been bought/sold at least once and possibly twice since I went there) its a bit more crowded, service is slower, and there are fewer gambler friendly game tables (single deck 21, craps, single 0 roulette).

Bally's became independent of Harrah's when Harrah's bought the Grand a few years back. The oldest facility down there, the hotel is...well...a holiday inn select type place. It is perfectly acceptable for a crash pad, but there isn't internet access available (except dial up) and its not quite as nice for hosting business as the Grand. On the other hand--the casino there has been very very good to me... Less crowded, nice comps, and a few more good games.

The Sheraton boasts a jacuzzi tub in every room. Its a nice hotel. Probably best place if you are bringing the wife down for a night or plan on soaking away some aches and pains after a day on the gold course, a night at the tables, or the emotional shock of your losses. The Sheraton, the Gold Strike, and Sam's rarely have rooms for less than 100 bucks. Even before Katrina, they seemed to price to scare the cheap airline pilot away. I guess they figure that's cheaper than spraying for us one we infest a joint...

I won't pretend to lecture anyone on gambling--there are plenty of guys here who probably know strategy and odds. What I will say is IF you know a game and IF you play with a bit of discipline you can usually at least stretch your bucks out to last quite a while. When I play my goal is not to double my signing bonus, but rather to entertain myself a few hours, get a drink or two and perhaps a meal, and ride an upside wave to pay for my room for the day. I've had my butt kicked a few nights, but generally speaking I can do alright. I'm usually too tired or have other work to do when I down there to gamble EVERY night (that gets dull too...) but its a nice diversion when I can get down there. Bally's steak place is also pretty good. I usually avoid the bloatorama buffetts and their crowds, but the food and service at the other place (I think its called the barn) was very good. Dinners are more than the 10 buck buffetts but typically less than 20 when the bills are settled.

The real story, however, is still the Holiday Inn on Democrat. I still seem to end up there more than anyplace else lately... With the airport shuttle its just too convenient of a place to meet other folks and/or scramble to the airport to jumpseat home at the end of a trip. Also worth mentioning--the lunch buffett there is country cooking and IT ROCKS. I don't know how long the current stafff has been there, but guys come over from local businesses and the TANG to grab lunch there and its pretty darn good. And..for your airline pilots out there...I think they price it at 9 bucks or so.
