FDX- Top 10 reasons to NOT sign the FDA LoA.

I have heard, mostly rumors I will admit, that the CAN (ZGGG) airport folks might not build the other runway that I heard they were going to build for FedEx. Also heard that if pilots were to live in CAN that the Chinese would be looking to get the 50% tax; if they were to let them live there at all. These rumors come from an LEC Chairman and TPE, MNL, and SIN FedEx folks.
Then, if you have been to China before, they can renege on things as it suits them, just because they can. I think that there are a lot of details to this whole new base that still have to be worked out with the locals. And now that FedEx has "broken ground" in CAN, the Chinese might have them by the nads on a lot of unresolved issues.
Just a little speculation, mixed with historical facts on how the Chinese "do business"!

I've heard the same thing about FedEx having problems with the Chinese (big surprise)
There is the tax thing of course. HKG taxes are about 17 %. CAN taxes are about 51 %. FedEx has to pay the taxes for crew members who chose to live in CAN, it's covered by the LOA. We've been told point blank after the LOA was voted in that if you want to live in CAN, your visa (and family's if applicable) and taxes will be covered by FedEx, they have no choice. Now, we get a couple of emails saying "Well, we're not really sure if you can live in CAN, we'll let you know later." If this turns out to be true, the whole LOA is null and void, and there's going to be big problems.
As far as the other runway, how many do they want? There's already two operating runways in CAN. Does FedEx want to make it 3??

It is my understanding that you can live anywhere within 100 miles of CAN. Huadu is just 5 so I think I am safe???

Can the company use guys living in HKG to cover trips from there - if a leg was to show up? Would they have to build them GT to and from CAN before the leg? -- Or are they able to try some co-terminal thing if it suits them?

DW said at one of the union meetings that he expected most of the deadheads to be from HKG but he didn't specifically address your question ... good question.

I wouldn't buy a house until you actually moved to the domicile. Even after hired and in Airbus class you could get reassigned or delayed.

Whale:
Like the guys said, don't buy anything yet.
The Union has said People can live in CAN and their tax costs and visas will be covered by FedEx. (yes, as you said Tax Equalization)
However, at some point after that, the company came out and said 'we don't know if you actually can live there, stay tuned for further information...'
The Union has then said if it turns out afterall that pilots can't live in CAN, you will be let out of being based in HKG.
However, I pointed out on the first post in this thread there is an easy way out for everyone, simply don't sign the Letter of Agreement (however, that doesn't apply to new hires!) based on the reasons I posted.
