Where do you work?
ABX Air. The 767 can do everything the Diesel 8 ever dreamed of and more, except where ETOPS is involved. Congrats on your hire. I really do wish everyone the best in all this mess, you and ASTAR too Hvy.

Districtpilot..

I'm sorry if I sound like I'm preaching here, so forgive me upfront.. Most of the jobs you will be seeking in the future will probably want you to have more multi time. The Caravan job is a good one, but not ideal. It served a purpose at the time for increasing your total time and giving you some turbine pic time.. which is good to get you up to the next step on the ladder. The ATI job might have been attainable last year, but not now. I highly recommend that you move up to a some multi turbine equipment.. If you can get into Pinnicle, they are still hiring and you might walk into a quick RJ upgrade, but I think even that door is closing very soon. If you can't get into a decent jet aircraft fairly soon, I would go to Ameriflight or Keylime and see if you could get a captain spot on the 1900 or the Metroliner. The pay is in the mid 40s and you can start logging some valuable ME turbine time. It's not as good as jet time.. but is much better than Caravan time. You need to move on soon. Your TT is there, now you need to fill some other categories.

Thanks for everyones advice and detailed advice as well cruiseclimb. I understand that ME Turbine would be the next logical step and if I were single I would already be giving my two weeks notice to Ameriflight, Key Lime, etc.
My wife is happy where we are and she doesn't want to move. I dragged her around enough, I can't blame her. I think I may just go ahead and bid on an FO position for an ATR in my company. If ATI is going to be hiring even stronger as 130drvr wrote, then come next year maybe I'll catch the train further down the line.

There is certainly something to be said for keeping the wife happy. I am quickly learning that being on your 1st wife places you in the minority in this business.

Always, always, always, keep the wife happy. It will pay dividends. even if they are dangling a shiny new airplane at you at another company, if it will have the potential to upset your QOL, tread carefully. I made the decision, when I separated from the AF, to go to a company that had family friendly(as much as that is possible) lines to bid. there were places that paid more, but were domiciled, required commuting or had 3 week trips or more as the standard.

I have been happily married to my only wife for 12 years, and the secret was involving her in every decision, that way she owns half the risk.

Please clarify the staqtement above.

I can't see them hiring up to 130 additional pilots to 'backfill' the DC-8.

Is it that they intend to keep the dc-8 and add the 767 to an expanding fleet. I thought they are getting rid of the dc-8 and peplacing them with the same number of 76's...

If they are getting rid of the DC-8 then why would they need this many more addtional pilots

It seems to me, (but then again what the hec do I know?), that they would just send the initial cadre of crews for the 76's to training and just hire maybe 30 additinal new guys to take their place while the boeing crews are in training.

Still can you explain how you get, or where you heard the additional 100 pilots next year?

By the way I got called in for the interview on the 17th of june.

Sorry for all the typo's in advance.

Last I heard they were planning on keeping DC-8's til around 2012. I would imagine some will be phased out earlier, but for now there's no indication that any will be parked soon. They're even doing a D check on a -71 right now which surprises me considering the expense of doing the check.

Word is straight from the CP. 767s will be in addition to DC-8s. Well into the future they may replace the 8, but not anytime soon.

Each 767 that shows up needs 10 pilots(5 crew ratio), 1-Jul, 1-Aug and 2-Dec. Long-term sounds like plans are a large fleet of 767s. With a higher crew ratio than the 8(5 vs 3), and since they are supposed to do a lot more international, there is a big need for pilots at ATI right now.

The more guys hired after me the better

PM me for better info.
