Also, never forget that there are other ways to qualify for an upgrade. Duty time > 11:30 at the end of a trip is one of the easiest ways.
8.A.4
b. A class of service higher than coach shall be authorized if:
i. a deadhead exceeds 5 scheduled block hours; or
ii. a deadhead is included in a single duty period exceeding 11:30; or
iii. the scheduled block hours of a revenue flight plus the scheduled block hours of a deadhead in a single duty period exceed 8 hours. However, if a domestic duty period does not exceed 11:30 and a deadhead within that duty period does not exceed 1:30 (OAG) block, the deadhead may be scheduled in coach

If I show 2100, fly to MEM, hubturn to ABC, and then pax home right away (arrival time at home 0900 for 12 hours total since show) am I eligible to upgrade ? Thanks in advance!

If you go to the hotel but don't get a legal crew rest before your deadhead, you're still on the same duty period and could qualify.

I really feel all your guys pain! My company wont even consider an upgrade until after 18 hours of duty, and when that happens they just split the leg up and lay us over somewhere to break it into 2 flights to avoid the upgrade, middle seat, back of coach, no FF miles!
How do you guys deal with the horror?

The basic problem is the folks in CTA don't get a copy of the SIG notes and have no idea what's newly 'legal' and what's not. Which means you usually have to get your ACP involved. I'm told that they are working toward a solution, but it's still that left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing thing (or was it left brain, right brain ).

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you do NOT get the "business select" fare when deviating on WN. All WN deadheads will be booked in "business select" and the company will pay the "select" price. If you deviate you only get the "regular" ticket price. This is a quote from the June 08 SIG letter.
Southwest Business Select: This was intended for scheduled deadheads on SWA as a way to alleviate some of the pain, especially on the mid-trip SDDHs that were prevalent at the time it was established. CTS should still book all scheduled SWA DHs with business select when available, however, the accepted fare (and your bank) will only reflect the cost of a basic ticket (w/o Business Select).
If you deviate on SWA, you can request Business Select, but the total cost of the ticket will be charged against your bank.
