Default FDX 757 jumpseat

Back to the original thread topic ... the 757. I caught a jumpseat on the 1 operational 757 this week.

The good ... very nice all glass (vice 757 standard half glass, half round dials) cockpit.

The bad ... flight left over an hour late due to maintenance issues (maybe including maint training?), the courier/jumpseat area had 3 very small airline seats, cramped jumpseat compartment, relatively noisy. IT's certainly MUCH nicer than catching a ride on a 727 but it won't be at the top of my j/s list in the future.

Do j/s face forward or backward? I assume they're out of the cockpit.

Mark - have you ever jumped on a UPS 75? I am asking because I'm curious how you’d compare your "relatively noisy" 757 to our without a doubt very noisy 75s? I've jumpseated on many pax version 757s before and have never experienced them to be this loud. I was told it had to do with ducting for the pacs; I've flown 737s before and find our 757s much louder.

The 'good' news is that supposedly it'll get much quieter in a few years as my hearing starts to go bad on me...

Also, your birds must be very spacious - we have 4 not 3 jumpseats on our 757!

PS. I’ve seen pictures of the new glass cockpit – very nice indeed.

Jumpseats are outside the cockpit, facing forward in front of a solid bulkhead. Seat are so close to the bulkhead that they don't recline (at least not enough to matter). Like AV8R said, it looks like there is room for a 4th j/s but the galley is large, making the entire courier compartment rather cramped. It would have been nice if they had put larger "business" class seats in, that probably came with the pax airplanes when we bought them?

Galley? Don't ever get our 757 cofiguration confused with anything decent. The price is right, but the price you pay on a UPS 757 jumpseat is high. We have a foldown beaver bench for two on the 9 g wall right next to the lav door, one swivelling seat immediately behind the FO, and a tall seat jammed above the ice chest immediately behind the Captain.

With 4 jumpseaters it's a cramped flight at best. Luckily our widebodies are doing most of the longer legs now.

We couldve had more room, but like our 767-300er pf, any crew facilities were discarded for additional can positions.

Now our new 747-400f is a nice ride, but I'm sure Boeing simply wouldn't allow UPS to screw it up in our usual manner. Like our MD11s, it actually has a reefer in the galley with hot and cold running water in the lav! Beats the saniwipes any day.

We'd be luck to have a swivel seat behind the F/O on the 75. You are confusing it with the 76.

So I guess you haven't flown on us, right?

MD11,

I won't make the ECU game. Probably going to wait until they come down to Miami and catch them at Dolphin Stadium. VT82.

You r correct. The seat behind the FO just folds down and doesn't swivel. I haven't actually jumpseated in the 757 for several years so I forgot the actual arrangement. What I will never forget is how uncomfortable all those seats were for any leg >2 hours!

Like a good freight dawg, I have logged many hours sleepin on the floor of the UPS 75! Nothing a good bedroll can't fix!
