Failed Line Checks at UPS
#21
The "perfect storm" for the furlough was;
1. Unprecendented downturn in the economy.
2. Rapid retirement of the 727, 747 and especially DC-8 fleet.
3. Age 60 retirement change.
4. UPS's bonehead refusal of the VJPP.
I would add #5 as UPS's increased utlization per crewmember.
Amending the next contract to include a 4a2b probably doesn't cost us if it's tied to mgt pay freezes and 401k contribution freezes. I'd trade for a clause like that to eliminate the FQS system. Allow a 60 hour guarantee for 20% of the bid lines and you'd probably have enough volunteers regardless. With no FQSs they'd be a lot less likely to enact it anyway. We gain a whole lot more limiting or eliminating MEF and FQS than we lose by a reduced guarantee clause, which many of us want anyway.

Line checks or recurrent checks? I've heard about some of the hideous (and highly unlikely) scenarios your guys have been getting in recurrent, and it doesn't surprise me that guys are having trouble passing them. Especially mgmt pilots.
Aside from the whole Babbitt/Colgan/increased surveilance thing, it sounds like something's amiss in your training dep't.

Sorry Lil J....I completely disagree. I was 1st open to concessions to save jobs but UPS would've RUN with it. They would have exploited that to the max and then I guarantee, they would have furloughed anyway. As far as
4a2d, maybe it worked for a little while at FedEx but here UPS would have screwed us with that too. See all those lines that are 65-70 hours? They would keep 4a2d in place forever and all we would see is people getting less pay to fly the same. UPS would EXPLOIT THE CRAP out of this. NO WAY! NO HOW! I would not vote for a contract with this kind of clause, no way, not here!
