From the looks of the pictures, to me, they got the core engine out and left the cowlings. Now, I'm not sure what is true or not, but I've been told that UPS salvaged whatever they could from that airplane, which was not too much. Much of the cockpit instrumentation, EFIS, radios, etc. were toast due to the heavy smoke and soot of the fire. I think one or two of the engines were toast as well. Again, this is all secondhand and thirdhand info.

The main thing is that 3 fine aviators brought that burning ship down to the ground in one piece, saved themselves, and that airplane held on as long as she could. May she R.I.P. - rest in pieces!

I was working in PHL that day. We were launching off of 09L and while taxiing out we could see the thing being smashed!

I rode on the jumpseat of a UPS DC-8 about 6 months ago. Great ride!! I would love to work for UPS someday. Seems like a great airline to fly for. Of course, that will be a stepping stone until I try to fly "commercially"!!!

"If so, this keeps the "no hull loss" streak in tact, but more importantly, it keeps the insurance rates down."

We self insure, so that won't effect our rates unless we decide to charge ourselves more. But nothing would surprise me here in the Worker's Paradise.

Oh, absolutely on the crew! I figured that went without saying. hehehe. After I put my glasses on, I could see the cores were gone.

Any indication to the cause of the fire? The crew sure did a great job, but I bet they were well focused and motivated!

The investigations seems to be pointing to lithium batteries.

Maybe that is because for the last eight years letting 30 year old men use the little girls room was a bigger priority.
