It takes at least a year to get ramped up if it was UPS. They don't have the Lift.
The lift exists in the current system and half of our 757 fleet is currently parked and being rotated to keep them serviceable . Aircraft in ANC currently under utilized . The RFD sort underutilized and the DFW sort shut down at night. The UPS system could absorb the postal contract rapidly. Two training centers plus contract centers could crank out the pilots quickly , its not like there aren't qualified pilots out there looking for a job. Especially if you look at the fact that our FO's make more than the current contract offer to the AA Captains.

Half of the 757's are not parked. Let's not be an Obama here. About 5 757's are parked last spring. And they are all back flying now. Let me say it one more time. The USPS contract Fills 30 DC-10's a DAY. RFD, DFW sorts are not a player here. It's Lift problems. UPS is in this to lower the Profit margin. Just like the TNT deal, never going to happen.

UPS will walk just like they did years ago with ATSG.

Half the 757 are being rotated in and out of service to keep them usable. Spares are staged through the system.
Most of our fleet sits during the day and could be flown on the second day system.
RFD and DFW sorts could be ramped up with very little difficulty . The capacity exists in our current system.
I fly the system 14 days a month and could fly the system more if the flying is available. Just with our current staffing we could fly 50% more , our guys would suck it up in a heart beat. 100 hrs pay and credit a pay period and not get close to FAR maximums.

Are you sure you're not a FDX pilot?

Nope: Look at our open time , it disappears fast. Our guys would fly it.

Avg 757 block hours per day ~ 2.5 hours. I think there's some room for additional flights in there...

Bump - any news on the contract renewal announcement? Or will it be when they darn well feel like it (tomorrow or July)?

Retirement seems to be working out great so I don't get here very often anymore. However, that said, I thought I'd comment on the USPS contract and how I believe it will effect UPS. Knowing what you all know about your (UPS) management and the methods they've used to "grow" your flight department, why would anyone believe that UPS has actually presented a viable bid for this upcoming contract. I suspect that when the dust settles, UPS will be carrying the same amount of USPS cargo that they carry today, and not one package more. Just my guess.
