Postal contract stuff

Margins .............. sounds like bean counter talk to me, depends on who you want to believe around here ................. There is little to no talk of what has happened to the flying, all I see is that there are increasingly more and more folks hanging around the flight ops counters at night, that I would normally see in the daytime flying arena ................... If the margins are that thin, why would FedEx even mess around with such a contract ? Or is it that they are trying to maintain an over the top profit margin to satisfy the Wall Street sharks in order to keep the stock prices buoyed up ? Either way, I appreciate the insight on this and I wanted to see what some others had to say about the radical change in our flying .......................

I believe UPS decided the margins weren't worth it, to have to build up a postal sort and potentially have to hire, buy airplanes etc. while FedEx already had the infrastructure in place in IND. Maybe they even told the Postal Service there would be massive furloughs...Slowly but surely FedEx is evolving their cost structure like ours, as much as possible trucked and railed vs. flown.

MEMbrain and CompetentFool,
Come on, please admit it. You are the same guy, using two different screen names right? Your comments and insight throughout different threads are just too brilliant to come from different sources.

Scabbing only happens when there is a strike and a picket line is crossed.

Agree. The word SCAB has a very specific meaning.

Mmm...Don’t think anyone is suggesting FedEx be otherwise. The issue here is that while profits are very high, less and less flying is being done by the original company: FedEx Express, in favor of rail and trucks. These directly compete with Express. Now, if you are already in your comfy left seat, all it really means is poorer choices of pairings to chose from. But, if you are still in the right seat, it means another contributor to the already long delays to upgrade = loss of income. Given the time value of money, and the hits from over 60, 4a2b, loss of third seat aircraft, and dumbocrats in the white house, it paints a murky picture for the foreseeable future.

So, the installation of additional "sleep rooms" was for a predetermined reason ................ more night flying.
The Express side is being purposefully shrunk in order to accomodate an elaborate plan of moving the Postal contract in other venues ................. Trucking, Trains, maybe other air carriers ?

It seems we're becoming a mini-UPS, in that we're trucking more and flying less. Which does not bode well for the future in terms of hiring and upgrade and a myriad of other issues.
God help us when the second generation takes over the company.
