Where to live in the greater MEM area
#51
Since this post is fast turning into a furball, I'll pitch into the fight.
Having been on reserve for my 1st 2 yrs in the MD, I got to know MEM pretty well. Yep, it sucked being in a crashpad in Cordova, no - I didn't like the murder count every night, yes - I DO like BBQ, but I got out and made friends (no, not FedEx'ers either). I also made better friends of some of the guys I had the privledge to fly with who lived in MEM. In all, it has worked out good. I have friends to visit in MEM -- some who are purple and some who are not.
I could live in MEM but like where I am now. I'm a quick commute to MEM but more importantly my seniority now affords double DH's or a pretty good selection of lines. To me, it's a wash. I cannot complain.
If I was married with kids then it would be a no brainer for me -- move to MEM, bid the highest seat I could hold, and bid RB. Since I'm a single 40-something bidding around 50% with too much time and $$$$ on my hands, I've even considered living in Paris or Frankfurt. ALA was a thought but it's to tough to get anywhere from there not to mention VISA issues.
With all due respect to Falconjet, I have gotten into the jet before and local Memphians have launched into a tirade about living in Memfrica and how much they hate it but "their kids, their wife, blah, blah, blah......" It's not just the commuters hatin' on MEM -- some of the folks that live there dis the place too.
Lastly, as a HUGE music lover, MEM is a great place! I have seen some fabulous talent and good acts. Been to a couple of churches with some incredible music directors and music that's all across the spectrum.

Hopefully I don't get flamed too much on this one. But seriously, we are probably going to be moving to MEM in the next year and I'm interested in finding out in which areas we should look. Where do most of the pilots (and their families) live? We have two children (toddlers) so good schools are important and my wife prefers a smaller community. Anything within a 45min-1hr drive of the AOC would be preferable. Thanks!

I guess you just want a little respect for your decisions and choices, much like the respect you show for others on a message board. So words and other's opinions can be "offensive" to you, wonder if that works both ways?

Please don't tell anyone that I've been supporting Memphis, because first of all, they'd not believe it, and secondly they'd think I've been drinking way too much purple coolaid.

Yes, but being as Memphis is about the 10th largest city in the US and is sporting the 13th highest murder rate (both are per capita), they are doing better than say, a city that's 5th largest with the 5th largest murder rate. Get it?

Math test for you:
Gigundo Town - 5,000,000 people - 400 murders/yr
Metropolis - 3,000,000 people - 300 murders/yr
Bay City - 2,000,000 people - 250 murders/yr
Mud City - 1,000,000 people - 225 merders/yr
Which City has the highest murder rate? What are the murder rates for each city!

Wow! I never knew that many people were so passionate AGAINST Memphis. Obviously, everyone is allowed their own opinion and I do appreciate you sharing yours with me. For the last 3 years I've had the luxury of living where I am based and also enjoying where I live. I know thousands of people commute yet I'm just not ready to deal with that regardless of how easy it can be. Anyway you slice it it's still commuting and you're still using your free time getting to and from work. If and when we decide to move to MEM I just wanted an idea of where to research and look into. I do believe this thread has provided that and I thank you. If we do move there I hope I don't get blasted for it someday in the cockpit.
However, like I said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion...it only gets annoying when you didn't ask for it. And besides, nothing is ever set in stone so if it does suck and we are truly unhappy....we move!
Let's put this one to bed.
Thanks again.
