I don't know where these people live, but damn it sure seems safe there! I was in Seattle the other day and saw more bums begging for money than I could count. I wouldn't say Seattle is a scary city....
Most of us avoid the bad areas of Memphis, and there are plenty of them. Murder rates are high, no doubt. But if you look where these murders take place, it is in those bad areas where you don't need to be. The murder rates in Gtown or Collierville are basically nonexistant, as well as crime in general. Both towns are closely patrolled and those that don't belong there often times get pulled over. I can honestly say that I think it is as safe as you will find in a large city. Most of these guys that have these terrible stories, weren't to savvy about where to go in this town. I don't think you will get accosted in Collierville. Hanging out near the airport and Brooks road may not be a great place to grab a cup of joe. Don't drive on empty...
Elem schools in these areas are fine and middle/high schools are iffy. Some are decent to good some are not. Private schools are an option, pick up an extra out and back each month and send your kid to a great school. With the cost of living there, you could probably afford to send your kids to a very good private school.

When CaptainMark's new website(www.godsgift2aviation.capt) is up, maybe he and his adoring fans will spend less time on this site.

On Layover in Memphis all month, I'm downtown in the heart of the Peabody area, anyway, half the storefronts are empty, alot of beggers (and I'm from the Bronx) and nothing to do except eat Bar-b-Que! Asked for a bookstore and the lady said we have none , besides why you need books we got TV!!! enough said!!

I'll just roll in one more grenade, I mean personal observation... For ME, the no-harm / no-foul jumpseat takes nearly all the stress out of commuting, I never sweat getting to work, and I don't worry about my family while I'm away. Like I said we do have a dog
As has been pointed out by others, no place is perfect for everybody so, I stand behind my original advice. Do your homework. Get the facts, then decide. Just to get you started...
2005 Population : Murders
Memphis 678,988 : 137
MA 6,398,743 : 175
ME 1,321,505 : 19
NH 1,309,940 : 18
RI 1,076,189 : 34
VT 623,050 : 8

Hey, only one poster thought your post was ridiculous. Your point is valid
. The rest of us have probably lived here for more than 6 months and can deal with the mempho problems. The no harm no foul is for line holders only though (I think??) . And unfortuately the murders for MEM in 2006-- 160 plus, but MSY and HOU doubled that
. Nice that Biage has a forum like this. BTW where is Biage?Cheers

Hopefully I don't get flamed too much on this one. But seriously, we are probably going to be moving to MEM in the next year and I'm interested in finding out in which areas we should look. Where do most of the pilots (and their families) live? We have two children (toddlers) so good schools are important and my wife prefers a smaller community. Anything within a 45min-1hr drive of the AOC would be preferable. Thanks!
p.s. yeah i know...i have been known to flame a bit...

Not so fast!
I often use NH-NF to get to work on RSV-A. Example - assigned a RSV trip with a 215a showtime 18hrs in advance, instead of catching the noonish jumpseat on NWA, I stay home until catching the 913p showtime jumpseat on FDX to MEM. Also, its possible to occasionally sneak home while on RSV when released after block in or assigned a trip early enough with a DH (deviate, go home for a day, DH from home). This was NOT possible when I lived in NW CO though!

, but there is plenty of crime in this area. While in training last spring, we had our apartment broken into - the dumb sh!ts busted the door in, splintering the frame. Fortunately, they did not take my mtn bike, my fly fishing gear, my iPod, my Leatherman, etc... They only took our $40 DVD player and 5 DVDs.
Same weekend, the Kroger was robbed at gunpoint late at night while the shelf stockers were working . All the gas stations (a BP station worker told me about 6+ times) and banks have been hit in the Hacks Cross area. Another FedEx pilot told me that when he used to live in this apt complex, he inadvertantly interupted a neighbor being robbed at gunpoint - neighbor said he might have saved his life - while getting in his car at 1am to go to the AOC.
The bad guys often commute on the Nonconnahbahn.

Unfortuately I agree that crime is on the increase south of Winchester on Hacks Cross
