My age group moved the goal line? You need a lesson in history, Son. ICAO changed the age limit several years before we did. Granted, there were guys (notably SWA pilots) who were lobbying Congress to change. They were mostly guys who lost their A plan retirement due to spurious bankruptcy filings. People who were counting on $100K a year pensions that saw them reduced to PBGC minimums.
What would you do in their shoes?
When it became apparent that the ICAO change was going to be universal (only the U.S., France and a couple banana republics were the only holdouts) Congress was forced to change the American law. Google the Supremacy Clause for the legal reason why.
Can you not understand there was a basic unfairness in the fact that foreign pilots could exercise their pilot license in U.S. airspace over the age of 60 while U.S. pilots could not.
Perhaps you jokers should look past your own self interest and walk a mile in their shoes. You're going to be faced with age mandated retirement eventually. Every one of you studs who claims they're going to retire at Age 60 are blowing smoke. You're the guys who will work until 65. Nothing like a hypocrite.

That's a whole lot different than YOU going to a regional expecting to upgrade quickly, move on to the Majors. So sorry, but life is full of pitfalls with unexpected consequences. You going to rag on the guys younger than you who are getting on with the Majors during this hiring wave? Back in the mid-80s guys were upgrading in two years at some Majors with no time on the B-scale. 5 years later, guys were hired on the B-scale, put in 5 years at half the pay of their predecessors and didn't upgrade for 6 years. Fast forward 10 years...9-11 and a recession drove the upgrade to 15 years at some carriers.
Aviation is a fluid environment effected by numerous variables. Grow up, sack up and play the hand you're dealt or get out. Its simple as that.
The difference between a jet engine and the entitlement generation...the engine QUITS whining when you get to the gate.

I'm not sure who this Packrat guy is or why he's so bitter?
Looking at his "Public Profile" it looks like he was almost certainly a military (Navy wings displayed) helicopter pilot. Sometime after that it looks like he flew CV-580's and narrow-body jets.
He references USAir guys getting furloughed with 18 years! Was he one of those guys? His type ratings sound suspiciously USAir-like. Lots of folks in this business, in his generation got furloughed or worse, fired when their Airline went "Sneakers UP." They think it makes them special?
So maybe ... just maybe, he doesn't have a "6-figure" pension to fall back on. Maybe he has no military retirement (more bad planning?) to supplement his less than adequate retirement planning. He probably can't afford expensive hobbies.
We'd probably be bitter too if we were him. I say we give him a break, let him apologize to all of us that he calls "spoiled brats" and let him fly as long as he wants. After all, we really like getting flying lessons from guys like him and hope he sticks around forever. We like getting scolded by "Dad" for having expectations in our chosen career. We were bad and we deserve to get spanked!*?

Mark,
I'm hardly bitter. I just don't think any pilot has the right to tell another pilot when or how he should retire. All the whiners here seem to think they were owed a Major airline job or an upgrade on a specified time line.
Considering the fluidity of the aviation business, it say those kind of expectations rival the Theater of the Absurd.
Everyone is dealt a hand based on when they got into the business. Some guys were A scalers who upgraded in 2 years. Some guys were B-scalers who upgraded in 6. Some were 9-11 victims who upgraded in 15.
The good news is with the current hiring wave those times are coming down quickly. The guys on the cutting edge of this wave will upgrade quickly and move on to wide body seats. Those who come in 5 years later may be doomed to narrow bodies for their career.
But throwing a screaming, name calling fit because life has been "UNFAIR" to you is peeing in the wind. Those who do that look like spoiled brats and idiots combined.

My logic is sound. You say "The law changed get over it". Airlines used the law to gut pension plans. Is one law OK and the other one not? Also, when did the regulated age change negotiations occur?
