Delta vs. FedEx
#61
Easy. Delta. You posted your question on the MAJOR forum first and did not post in CARGO until it was suggested. Seems your gut may be DAL
Also, you mention nights. Say Nights and you think FedEx etc.
Two great offers, have great friends at both. Great problem to have, only worse was friends in 1990ish who had DAL, AA, FedEX offers at same time leaving AD. Good luck, you'll figure out how to enjoy either choice.
Congrats!

I posted this earlier on the "Major" side of the forum and it was suggested that I post it in the "Cargo" section as well.
Fellow Pilots,
I just got my dream job offer. Twice! Both FedEx and Delta want me to start indoc on the same day next month. I'm doing my research and looking at pay scales, retirement plans, etc. I want to live in the northeast (New Hampshire or Maine). I don't mind flying at night… sometimes.
Any advice or opinions on which offer I should take would be greatly appreciated. Or please point me to a discussion that has already occurred on the forum.
Thanks in advance!

If commuting is your concern, FedEx has DH trips that pay you to commute.
Better vacation, Pension.
Regardless of how payrates work out in Delta's new contract, still gotta look at two things: 1. Minimum pay per day at each airline. 2. Percentage of pilots at each airline who are making the highest pay.
Good luck

I wonder about a trip that leaves at 2355 on Monday and returns at 0005 on Wednesday. Three days of pay? Or do these trips even happen?

Reputation? Unfounded. Every airline has a small percentage of guys who are jerks. Just because the 777 has the nickname, "Tool Box", doesn't mean all the guys are jerks. Every 777 crew I've Js'd with has been nice.

I think because it's so rare that a crew treats someone badly, that when it happens, the rumors resound forever. It's the exception, not the norm, I'm sure. Most everyone is great, especially since most of the tools have retired, so when it happens--its a shock.

There's a window where it doesn't count an extra day - something like 2 hours on either side - so blocking back in at 0005 would not earn the extra day. I'm not a Delta guy so I'm just going off conversations. My point is we have a ton of great things in our contract, min pay per day is probably not one of them. Since only in the Fedex world is a "day" 24 hours - in the pax world a day is a calendar day. There are lots of trips that leave Monday morning and return Wednesday morning at Delta and would pay at least (most likely more depending on the rig) 3 days. We also have quite a few trips at Fedex that say leave Monday evening and return bright and early Wednesday morning and would pay about 1.25 days even though you are usually screwed for Wednesday and have to commute in on Monday. Not saying I'd take the Delta contract at all - we are much better in a ton of places - not in min pay per day though - even when you factor in the differential in rig pay.

It's not every 777 crew - most of those crews have at least an FO and and RFO - it's just the Captains that are the tools.
