I hope there are psychological studies done in the future to discover how this virus became so feared by the healthy portions of the populace.
I have seen multiple social media accounts with people self identifying themselves a “Covid survivor” - as if it were cancer. Our response to this as a country has been truly bizarre - ranging from one extreme to the other.

It could because most of our country is not healthy. People keep saying healthy to mean don’t have cancer etc.
40 percent of the country is obese
19-50 percent of the non elderly population had a pre existing condition.
this is before you add in elderly and elderly with pre existing conditions.
As Americans we eat terribly we don’t exercise by and large.
so no your average American isn’t healthy.
for reference China has a 6 percent obesity rate. It may help to explain why Asia did so much better then we dod.

I'm a GA pilot who used to also fly a lot commercially. I have to do a trip next week SFO-GJT-SEA-SFO. Carrying too much stuff this trip to fly my Archer. I thought for about a minute about a trip with my head 3 feet in front, behind, and next to people drinking and eating around their masks. Even with air exchange.
I'm driving. See all you airline folks again when there is a vaccine.

Public perception is a huge part of our current woes.
Good luck.

Exponentially higher risk in those places, most likely.

Indeed public perception has been and will continue to be the main problem right now.
In general, people estimate the severity of COVID-19 to be 100x (not 100%, but 100-times) more than it actually is:

Anxiety and hypochondria are pervasive. I think it will likely take years to resolve this as in my experience hypochondria doesn't just go away.

Risk
I would argue here that you have an SIGNIFICANTLY higher chance of catching covid from the random gas stations/restaurants/hotels you'll be visiting than you would catching it on a plane with all the current precautions in place.

2. Restaurants - carry own in cooler or drive through
3. Motels - only use ones where you drive up to your room, private door, checkin from behind glass
Wear N95 mask and gloves whenever I leave the car.
Very little risk here.

This is a big reason why I've advocated mask wearing from the beginning. Nobody HAS to participate in the economy and if they go out and see everyone wearing masks they're more likely to participate, but If they see people blatantly disregarding the mask rules they think they're not taking any other precautions, they're probably going to be the first to get the virus, and there's no telling how much stuff they'll touch and breathe on before they get symptoms bad enough to keep them home.
Also, another great Uncle Rob video on mask effectiveness:

I'm a big fan of his other work, as well.

HAHA...you fly around in a piston single engine airplane and you are afraid enough of COVID killing you to wear that ridiculous getup to pump gas....I think your risk management priorities are completely outta wack....
