I don't have any problem with the 30-hour layovers. I'm with you, using them to explore local fare and activities is fantastic. My favorite layovers are those where I've got time and I know folks willing to show me their favorite things to do.
I'm just saying that, going to a duty (only) rig won't solve every problem. Each and every change needs to be evaluated for how it can 1) put more money into our W2s but also 2) how can the company 'optimize' it to their benefit.
I keep hearing people spout off about this rig or that rig without thinking about how it'll impact the overall QOL. You can't look at the rigs in a vacuum.

I’d even take it a step further. Pay me per duty hour and forget flight time completely with existing rigs. If a trip is lengthened by weather or any reason you’re compensated for remaining on duty. They can can have me sit wherever they like, including in a control seat.

Are you for real!? I love those. Skiing in the winter and music/beer festivals in the summer all on the company dime. If you don’t like them, then don’t bid them.
If you’re junior, then stop bidding equipment you can barely hold. Voila, 30 hr problem solved for you.

I’d rather work 2 days in...2 days, and have my day off at home with my family. To each their own though, but they mostly go junior for a reason.

The problem with 30hr layovers is a typical 3 day will fly 7:45 day 1 - arrive at 11p/12a. sleep (but not too long because you have a 430a van on day 3) then block 7:45 on the last day. For a total of 15:30-15:45 block. Essentially a min credit 3 day that could have been flown in 2 days with a day off at a random outstation.

Really? You wouldn't rather recover in the comfort of your own home? I guess this just shows how different we all are! To each their own

But seriously, this just further showcases that for most of the things I dislike, there are other out there that prefer them. Case and point...I have guys look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them I hate 6 days and wish we had a lot more 3 day Europe trips. Of course they're commuters and I have an easy drive into work. Some of them wish we had 12 day trips back

Cool. Great. Let's still get a MDG and you can bid your long layover (they will still exist). That why if the company decides to fly your balls off on the other days, you'll get paid more than 5:15 a day.
