We must be in different bases.

Welcome to the new reserve at DAL. We would always cover other bases occasionally but lately it is the norm, at least for some NB categories.

We have a 737 Pilot base at every domicile and we are now effectively system wide reserves. I bid reserve in March for LAX and covered SEA, SLC, and NYC trips. This fellas is the new normal.

Not sure why this is more prevalent now? Maybe HAL has taken over for the schedulers?

why wouldn’t or shouldn’t reserves be used wherever they’re needed, even if the trip originated out of base?

Yeah, I don't get what the big deal is. Isn't that what reserves are for? And also as a commuter, I love having reserve trips that begin and end with a deadhead from a hub!

Well I never said that they shouldn’t - I was emphasizing the apparent change in scheduling, but I will give you a good reason anyway.

In the LAX 73N bid package you will not see a rotation that pushes earlier than 0800 AM East coast time. The company does this because of the whole body clock/WOCL issue that you see in QCQ every so often. I was assigned a NY trip that had a 0615 push out of BOS. That was after flying late on the west coast on previous days. 0615 push, 0515 show, 0500 van, 0430 wake up, oh yeah 0130 body clock.

So if the company agrees to not fly regular pilots earlier than 0800 east, why not afford the same protections for reserve Pilots? That trip should have gone out to a NYC GS if they could not cover it with a local WS or reserve.

So to be clear - I have no issue with the company using reserves to cover open time per the contract. I was mainly referencing the change in how Reserve’s are being used. I guess the problem is the whole no earlier than 0800 East coat is not contractual but something the company agreed to with the RCC previously. But if it’s a good policy for lineholders it’s probably a good policy for reserves.

Our over all reserve utilization is already very low. I suspect some are going to be very disappointed in this contract. If we were able to force the company into base only reserves it would lead to even more Consolidation of the flying at a few major hubs.
