Because JL has a damaged credibility with the pilot group, someone else needs to advocate for the newly submitted offer. Bastian has one job only that day on that Town Hall: convince the pilot group they should take the deal. At this stage, Delta is looking for a small win -- an excuse to not furlough. If the MEC turns down the deal, Delta is in a conundrum, as it needs to retain credibility for future negotiations; therefore, go through the furlough. I imagine it to be in stage, 300 or 600 first. But Delta would rather retain the staffing to retain flexibility for when travel demand comes back.

100% agree. Particularly if UAL pilots approve their TA and if AAL is able to lower their furlough numbers further. Management doesn’t want to yield market share to competitors, which they could be forced to do if they cut too deep.

We're in survival mode only from racism and BLM per Ed.
If the company is in “survival mode,” why did it refuse Cares loan money? I know they got a supposedly better rate with the SkyMiles program as collateral but if you are in “survival mode” wouldn’t you want as much cash on hand as possible and then once you survived, use that cash to payback the debt if you still have it?
