I'm not sure, but..are you posting in the right thread? If you want a " bad cop routine" UAL did that for years. A real "round ord" buster from my friends that interviewed there. The would not even send me an application 34 years ago...a result of their EEOC slam...but they were hiring...just not my type

They were all hired btw, and reflecting on the experience they were pretty sure the interviewer was just trying to get them agitated to see how they reacted. From recent interview feedback, seems like they aren’t doing that anymore. If indeed they ever were, small sample size could just be a coincidence that it happened to several of my friends.

I can’t comment on current practice, but I will say for certain this was done in the past, at least sometimes. They would find something to push your buttons on, just to see how you respond.

I got pushed on my total time. As a Mil fighter guy, though I had thousands of hours, I was thousands of hours lower than many, especially civ-only pilots. One interviewer pushed in the middle of the interview. I calmly and rationally answered his question, and we moved on.

At the end of the interview, the HR rep asked if anyone else had any more questions. This same interviewer came back to my total time, and with an almost incredulous and decidedly pointed tone, adding some of his own “experience” in the Navy, proceeded to challenge why I had “so little time for a 20 year military guy“. I again very calmly explained why my total time was fairly typical for an AF fighter guy, especially one who had a lot of time in the AT-38, where I had more sorties than hours.

He looked left and right, everybody nodded and began to stand up. He immediately broke into a giant grin, extended his hand, and seem to indicate that I had responded appropriately.

The point being, if you do get a “bad cop”, be honest, but also don’t get rattled. Be able to calmly explain, and even turn the “issue” into a reason that it’s a positive, and you’ll be fine. Good luck.

I can testify to the UAL interview being pretty confrontational 25 years ago. I got hassled because I couldn’t remember the MTOW of the Piper Chieftain I had flown 10 years earlier, then the mid-twenties female FO (in full uniform, including hat) pretty much accused me of padding my logbook. I laughed at her. I think I had around 9000 hours at the time, including around 3500 in 737s.

Things like that, designed to get under your skin.

The DL interview, for comparison, was more like talking about flying with friends you just met.

Is any of this relevant today? I don’t know. But I’m old, and I like telling boring stories of how it was ‘back in my day…’ Just ask any of the poor FOs sentenced to sit next to me for 4 days.

I got an invite to interview near the end of October. I'm a mil guy, and probably overthinking things. I had a couple questions for the group about required documents to bring. I've got my ARMS folder and my Air Force flight time squared away, I'm digging for my old logbook from when I first started flying. My OPRs, Form 8s, and Form 942 are all computer print offs not "original" pen and ink documents. Is that ok? I also have searched high and low for my FCC license, and can't find it, but found on the FCC website "ULS" or whatever that I can print an "original copy". Does this count as a copy, or an original, or both? Again, I am probably over thinking, I just don't want paperwork and the ability to follow directions to be the thing that tubes my interview, I can do that on my own! Hahaha! I'm really excited about the opportunity, it's almost unreal. Thanks for any feedback.

Bring all your source material, but list the totals out on a spreadsheet so that it's clear where you are deriving your time from. I too had some computer printouts, and log books in different forms to account for.

Yes, reorder your FCC license, you'll be asked to see it every check ride (training and FAA) from here on out, along with FAA license (with correct address printed on it and signed by you) and current medical (make sure medical has both pages).

They still occasionally do it. When I interviewed with UA a few years back, the “bad cop” asked me normal questions, but then would intentionally seem uninterested in my answer (looking around the room, checking his watch, negative body language, I think he even started doodling at one point). I just kept answering the questions. At the end, he flipped a switch and and was professional and very eager to thank me for my time and interest. Got the CJO so they must have planned it.

Either that or he was bi-polar.

You will be fine. The “originals” stack is a just in case they didn’t get a good copy. You don’t turn that in, they won’t see it unless something is wrong with the copies you give them. All my stuff was copies. Make sure you sign the FCC, FAA cert, and medical forms. They will ask you to do it if you don’t.

Wait… the FCC radio operator permit that says “original copy” is not the original? It’s the only one I have, never got anything in the mail. Just that one that I downloaded and printed…
