PBS and average day vs Min day were responsible for 90% of the manning shift during BK, per the reps. There’s a reason airline management wanted those two things so badly. At NWA, those two things resulted in needing 15-18% less pilots overnight.

I like shorter trips, 4 is long and 5 is ridiculous. That’s why I end up with 3 day trips back to back. I suck at bidding and the company knows I love to be gone for longer stretches.

I don’t know the prior rules at NWA so can’t comment. On the Delta side changes in total allowable credit hours and lost vacation were the biggest drivers of job loss. PBS did not have as big a impact as the company hoped. Dramatically lower pay rates caused pilots to fly more to make up the difference and the increases in caps plus other work rule changes allowed the extra flying.

PBS at NWA was pushed in kind of an aggressive way by a handful of guys, and it was in place well before BK. The "paper bidding" before that could be best described as "Wow, this is a bit weird. There has to be a story behind it." Reserve bidding was handled differently because reserves were all separate categories from line holders.

Im a commuter and I HATE 5 day trips. The only 5 day trips that I don’t entirely hate are the 5 days with 4 duty periods, a long layover on the 3rd night, with a red eye at the end. If I could work commutable 3 day trips, I’d do it, but rarely do I see commutable 3 day trips on the 320. I can tolerate 4 day trips but it seems even commutable 4 day trips can be rare, depending on the time of year.
Also, the FA’s seem to have lots of 4-5 hour sits on their trips. That alone would make me vote in a union at the first opportunity.

Exactly this. I am not against having 5 day trips, but quite a few categories are dominated by 4 and 5 days so much so that it made staying inside the LCW almost impossible without getting at least one 5 day. I never thought I would go back to international, but the way these domestic trips look now have me heading that direction.
