Trip quality? Ouch

On this we agree. When commuter-heavy bases like NYC have a preponderance of 1 and 2-day trips and local-heavy bases like SLC or ATL have a preponderance of 5-days, someone somewhere needs to re-evaluate ….
…. or they simply don’t GAS.

He was at pinnacle, they had stupid low staffing numbers and everyone had to check out at the end of a trip. Pinnacle would just assign you more crap at the end of your trip. Lineholders might have been better off but they didnt have a lot of them, and you worked for free for the first 14 minutes after schedule.
Mesaba fixed most of this for them when pinnacle "bought" mesaba. Keep in mind, he did all that crap and pinnacle would sometimes just not post their paycheck for a few days. They'd still show up to work, and pretend everything was fine, but apparently no one who worked there cared. Pinnacle didnt pay the mesaba guys once, just once, and we got the feds involved.

Their ability to work any fleet and position helps but the real driver is their work rules or lack of work rules. If we adopted their rules the company would agree in a heartbeat to a 3 day cap on domestic trip length. Our flight attendants are among the most efficient of the major airlines. The forum would however explode if we adopted their rules. Keep in mind also that Delta once capped domestic trips at 4 days. NWA flew 5 day trips and Delta eliminated them post merger. We demanded the company bring the trips back.

edit to add, hopefully as we simplify our domestic fleets, that will allow us to open more bases, and have better trip mixes.

Look we all get the FAs have crap rules, that's not the point. The point is we should have some kind of semblance or consistency in our bid packets. That should include an even distribution of trips of 1 to 5 days. I get commuters love 5 days, well I love 1, 2 and 3 days. It's crap when we suddenly have zero 1 and 2 day trips. I get wanting 4 and 5 day trips for the commuters but we should have an equal share of 1 to 3 day trips for the local pilots.

But I think a way to make that happen may include something like VBs

Im a commuter and I HATE 5 day trips. The only 5 day trips that I don’t entirely hate are the 5 days with 4 duty periods, a long layover on the 3rd night, with a red eye at the end. If I could work commutable 3 day trips, I’d do it, but rarely do I see commutable 3 day trips on the 320. I can tolerate 4 day trips but it seems even commutable 4 day trips can be rare, depending on the time of year.
Also, the FA’s seem to have lots of 4-5 hour sits on their trips. That alone would make me vote in a union at the first opportunity.
