On this we agree. When commuter-heavy bases like NYC have a preponderance of 1 and 2-day trips and local-heavy bases like SLC or ATL have a preponderance of 5-days, someone somewhere needs to re-evaluate ….

Depends on situation. I commuted to NYC from FL for a while and it was a 2 leg commute. I wanted 5 days as much as I could, or stacking 3 days back to back. Whatever helped me commute the least number of times a month.

But yeah, NY has had crap trip mix for a while. That needs to change.

Mesaba fixed most of this for them when pinnacle "bought" mesaba. Keep in mind, he did all that crap and pinnacle would sometimes just not post their paycheck for a few days. They'd still show up to work, and pretend everything was fine, but apparently no one who worked there cared. Pinnacle didnt pay the mesaba guys once, just once, and we got the feds involved.

huh??? Most of this is completely false.

Yes I know they can work multiple aircraft types and their trips typically suck. I'd rather work a hard 3 day trip than any 5 day.
Their ability to work any fleet and position helps but the real driver is their work rules or lack of work rules. If we adopted their rules the company would agree in a heartbeat to a 3 day cap on domestic trip length. Our flight attendants are among the most efficient of the major airlines. The forum would however explode if we adopted their rules. Keep in mind also that Delta once capped domestic trips at 4 days. NWA flew 5 day trips and Delta eliminated them post merger. We demanded the company bring the trips back.

while their ability to work any fleet I’m sure plays a huge role, I think the fact they have quite a few more bases and virtual bases also helps a lot. I remember reading this forum and how quick many on here were to want VBs pulled down for us without even trying them when the company tried to open MCO. Can’t have it both ways.

edit to add, hopefully as we simplify our domestic fleets, that will allow us to open more bases, and have better trip mixes.

Look we all get the FAs have crap rules, that's not the point. The point is we should have some kind of semblance or consistency in our bid packets. That should include an even distribution of trips of 1 to 5 days. I get commuters love 5 days, well I love 1, 2 and 3 days. It's crap when we suddenly have zero 1 and 2 day trips. I get wanting 4 and 5 day trips for the commuters but we should have an equal share of 1 to 3 day trips for the local pilots.

agree wholeheartedly! I believe WN and B6 actually spell out in their contract a range of what % of each day length must be in the bid package. I hope we can include something like that for NB bid groups in the next contract.

But I think a way to make that happen may include something like VBs

Im a commuter and I HATE 5 day trips. The only 5 day trips that I don’t entirely hate are the 5 days with 4 duty periods, a long layover on the 3rd night, with a red eye at the end. If I could work commutable 3 day trips, I’d do it, but rarely do I see commutable 3 day trips on the 320. I can tolerate 4 day trips but it seems even commutable 4 day trips can be rare, depending on the time of year.

Also, the FA’s seem to have lots of 4-5 hour sits on their trips. That alone would make me vote in a union at the first opportunity.

Is this the part where we all start listing what we like individually as if that’s meaningful in some way?
