Small bases in both TX and FL would be huge from a recruiting and retention standpoint. Both are desirable places to live for many and are experiencing rapid growth.
DFW is currently on pace to surpass Chicago to become the 3rd largest metro area in the U.S., putting it behind only NYC and Los Angeles. AUS saw 33% growth in the past decade. The idea that Delta can’t make money in TX or FL is insane. |

I think this is true of every airline. I agree PSC and/or more pilot base options would absolutely be a great way for an airline to get an edge over their competitors when it comes to attracting new pilots. Younger people are less likely to “suck it up” and move to an unappealing base for the next 40 years. Just because the old man did it, doesn’t mean they will. Like it or not, that’s reality. So either adapt, or get left behind while clinging to outdated paradigms. Its in Delta’s long term interest to get the jump on this.

Alright already. Let’s just open an AUS base and be done with it.
Anyone have any issues over the first weekend without PSC? |

Grew up there too. Family moved to ATL when I was 14. Wife worked for a company that makes caramel colored sugar water. She retired in 2016, daughter was out of the house and asked ourselves why are we still in ATL? Neither of us could come up with a good reason.

New hires would never see those bases. Not sure that helps recruiting. I don't see us going back to Dallas. We had a base and closed it, abandoned the market. I don't see us going back to CVG or BOS either. I know, it's right around the corner  but its been there for 10 years. We are always making excuses to do BOS "in the near future." BOS has become synonymous with the 787 at Delta.
The company has done this for many years for FAs. It would absolutely benefit pilot recruitment. It would also likely take a complete turnover of our current management team to ever occur. |

I don’t think anyone here is talking about opening new hubs in these cities. Given our ongoing NB fleet consolidation, small 320 or 737 bases would be feasible in many cities with little change to our existing network.

Not mgmt, the union itself is built to protect existing bases and stand in the way of outlying bases. There is a whole airline sized LEC in ATL that will squash any attempts to make small bases that are anywhere they perceive to be "their flying is to be diluted".

The company small flight attendant bases are virtual. Some are seasonal and others have been closed. Delta can open new pilot bases anytime they want. They can’t however be virtual or seasonal.

AUS currently has ~40 departures a day. Mostly on the 320. Throw a joint base with Dallas or SAT and you’re up to 70-80. 320 or 220 only into the Texas cities for the last 5+ years. Some of our bases have less departures on certain fleets than that… From my understanding the Union pulled the plug on the virtual basing in MCO. If anything a few outstation bases would ease some commuting pressure, open up some seats for nonrevving and be a useful tool for recruiting. Fewer pairings with a penalty lap too probably… |
